Moor Franciscan Friary , not an abbey as stated on the signage The building bears the scars of quite a lot a destruction . Most of the windows cut stone has been removed a some point .The chancel arch is badly damaged and has a cement floor inserted in the 1930’s . The information on the building is outdate and contradictory An example of this, the historical sign mentions in some detail that the friars lived in the building for over 400 years , but there’s also a reference to the friars living in a Priory. In the Franciscan order only females lived in a priory , not friars . Evidence of the cloister and other buildings associated with the Friary in the fields in front of the carpark were found in works carried out by the broad of works in the 1930’s and by an archaeological digs carried out in the 80’s / 90’s . A historical floor plan base on this information would enhance the visitors experience to this...

A lovely little Franciscan Friary founded in the 13th century by Donnchadh Mór O'Briain, King of Thomond. Historical evidence suggests alterations to the church were made in 1471 but that damage caused by fire soon after mean that the current ruins date to a little after this time. The friary was dissolved in 1541 after the dissolution of the monasteries came into effect from 1537-1541 and the building and land became the property of John Fitzgerald, brother of the Earl of Desmond. An intriguing spiral staircase can be seen leading up near the entrance but is locked to the public and no harm as it does not lead anywhere safe now, but still makes me want to climd...

Nice old abbey building for a quick wander with some interesting history on the plaques outside. Did the 3km Moor Abbey Loop as advertised on plaque outside. It’s a pleasant short hike across fields and along the river but particularly muddy on the day. They’re still working on it and it will be a very nice walk once finished. Hiking boots required for second half. There are electric fences to be traversed, though this is easily done. Nice way to spend an hour. Nice views of...
