Great place for a bit of history in Carrick-on-Suir. Beautiful restored Elizabethan era fronted manor house with much older Castle at the back. The castle itself is mostly being restored or in ruins but the manor front is beautifully restored and maintained. Theresa the guide is so knowledgeable and she will give you a fascinating tour of the history of Black Tom the Earl and his wife Elizabeth.
The long room is breathtaking and the whole place has a lovely feel to it. The short tour, priced at 3 euros each for adults and takes around 20/25 mins is great as it includes enough information about the history of the house and earldom without becoming tedious or boring.
It made me hate being English ofcourse, as most museums in Ireland do, but it was well worth the trip and lovely Carrick is always nice to visit.
Parking outside is pretty much free (we didn't get a ticket for the 45 mins we were here) and there is parkland infront of the manor for a nice stroll after.
They make you watch a 15 minute video before the tour but it isn't as boring as it sounds and was very interesting and...
Read moreThis is a great castle to visit the tour guide takes you through many rooms that are finely furnished. The tour guide is very informative about many parts of the castle. There is a great long room with an amazing ceiling filled with details, as many of the ceilings are in the rooms. There is a large courtyard to see with the old ruins all around. Inside the tour takes you right up to the attic. There is also a display room with a model of the way the castle was. Many parts were restored as you could see from the old pictures from before restoration. You have to take the tour to see inside the castle. Wednesdays it’s free to enter. Note the tiny peak holes around the front...
Read moreThe history of this castle and it's owner is simply astonishing! One of the most important corners of the Irish struggle for freedom begun here as the earl of Ormond achieved the conquer of a great part of the green island for his beloved queen and for the British crown. He served his queen really good and without any doubt was ready to betray his family his wife and his own land for a never rewarded love: the love in the eyes of a dog for its master, the love of a subject for his monarch. And here a keystone of the British domination of Ireland was set. Thousands of deaths, rivers of sorrow, all for the pair of brown eyes. Unbelievable but extremely interesting, highly...
