I visited The Curragh Museum in Co. Kildare. This unassuming building is packed with artefacts relating to Ireland's long military history from rebellions and imperial occupation to independence and peacekeeping duties.
And one artefact caught my eye in particular. The Sam Brown belt of Sean Connolly, the first Irish combatant to be killed in the Easter Rising ("Éirí Amach na Cásca). The museum also houses the amoured Rolls Royce "Sliabh na mBan", the armoured car, which brought Michael Collins to Cork to be ambushed and killed.
The curator was very well informed and discussed many of the artefacts with us when we chatted to him. Unfortunately, because the staff are full-time members of Óglaigh na hÉireann they can be called away at short notice. So it is best to telephone in advance to ensure the museum is open.
