The Curragh spent €100m on a revamp and screwed up very badly. It is now an absolutely miserable place on an afternoon like today which was wet and windy. For me it’s probably the worst racecourse in the country on other than a calm sunny day. The entrance fee is always ridiculously high and if you want a race card you have to spend another €4. Thankfully we got free tickets. If not I’d have looked for my money back. The below stands area is like an airport hangar and is a great illustration of the huge waste of space which happened with the revamp. In the old design, there were 3 levels. Ground then Premier for very regular racegoers like us and the expensive upper tier suites. Now it’s ground and upper tier only so no real comfort to be had on a bad day like today other than for an unaffordable price. Back to the entrance charge. A couple buying a card each would be down around €60 before having a drink or food or having a bet. That’s just ridiculous for a group 1 day which had almost no atmosphere and you had to go inside to get fully away from the rain and wind. I can watch the racing at home on a screen for free so why would my wife and myself pay €60 to watch it on a screen at the Curragh. It’s nearly 60 years since I started going to the Curragh. It has always had a special place in my heart but now it can’t attract a proper crowd on a group 1 day and I’m sadly not surprised. Unfortunately the management doesn’t seem to care because they’re all on good numbers and are paid whether or not the place is attracting the crowds it should be. The manager talks of being more concerned about customer’s safety experience than the numbers who come. Absolute poppycock. The main reason big crowds go is for the atmosphere which can only be generated by a big crowd. That’s the experience people remember and that’s why numbers are so pathetic. Derby day even 20 years ago had 30,000+. Now the management would boast if 10,000 turned up. I can’t remember the last time there was a proper big crowd at the venue even on its biggest day- Derby Day. This certainly hasn’t been the case since the hugely expensive revamp substantially financed by Irish taxpayers. Don’t bother going unless you’re invited into a suite and you’re not paying. Advising this hugely saddens me but I’ve given up on the management of ever really trying to restore one of the best racecourses in the world to the former glory it...
