It is amazing that Newgrange has 340 reviews, while Knowth has only 59, when Knowth is by far the more impressive site. If you're visiting Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and have time for only one site, I recommend Knowth. The downside is you can't go into the tomb (apparently the passages are not stable, which is so unfortunate). The upside is the number and quality of carved stones around the tomb - absolutely gorgeous and you can go right up and touch them (Newgrange has only a couple, plus the impressive big stone in front of the entrance). Also, the numerous smaller tombs around the main one give a wonderful feel to the place.
However, if you want a great off-the-beaten-track visit, go to Loughcrew Cairns, and get the key before heading up. They have wonderful carved stones inside the tomb, the main tomb is wonderful with its rock-strewn surface, and the surrounding tombs are great. Also, it is quieter and you get a better feeling of the sacredness...
Read moreTombs, calendars, mounds older than the pyramids. Stones were transported along the river in Neolithic times from a distance of 30-80 km. The construction period of one area was about 50 years and it was built by an estimated 400 workers at a time; today it is already known that the ancestors of today's inhabitants of the island did not build the building, but from the Middle East, they were darker-skinned and probably occupied a higher position in society. It is said to have been confirmed by DNA tests from the bone dust.
Entrance is paid at the visitor center. I recommend a guide, without one the monument won't tell you much. There is a online reservation system for the maximum number of visits per day. Order so you won't be disappointed. It also applies to other mounds. They cook quite well in the center, families with children also eat here. In addition, it is nicely equipped. USB chargers and classic sockets common...
Read moreI wish it had been better explained by the various travel advisors we consulted that you have to arrive before they open to get early tickets for admission that can be used right away. We attempted to go our first afternoon and didn't even get an admission ticket to be used later, so since we were flying out of the country the next day, we arrived for entrance at 8:30am and got on the second shuttle. It also was not explained that you have to ride a shuttle to both Knowth and New Grange to tour them. We watched an older couple drive up to where our shuttle dropped us (obviously using Google maps to find it) and a shuttle driver turned them away explaining the process. They may not have gotten a ticket to enter later :o( Also, we weren't warned beforehand that closterphobes may not want to enter, so my husband and daughter went in without me. Disappointing after all the trouble we went to just...
