A very fine early 18th century corn mill on the River Barrow origonally powered by two very wide undershot water wheels with a large water volume and low fall estimated to be 5'1524mm. The water power to drive and support such a large mill would have been around 200hp 149Kw. A further addition to Millford Mill was the construct of a vertical shafted water turbine of around 120" in diameter driving through a cast iron bevel gear and pinion to drive a Direct Current Generator through a series of pulleys and large cotton rope belt drives. All of this equipment designed by a Mr James Gordon an early designer of water Turbine was housed in a new mill Structure nearest to the River . A clear join line in the two different styles of stone work is visible on the mill elevations. The power was sold and lit the local area and the town of Carlow. Note the engraved plack on the end wall of The Mill for more details. In 1983 Mr John Alexander the Mill owner contacted me to up date the now disused and obsolete Turbine equipment l produced a full scheme design for a Low head high volume Water turbine to be installed in the origonal location of the old Turbine. This new Turbine produced by my Company Newmills Hydro in Ballycarry County Antrim was 2.220m in Diameter and weighed 10,500Kg and could produce 250kw of electrical power which was sold to the National Grid. Mr Alexander operated this Turbine there until his death some years ago.l have attached a photo of the newly comissoned 250Kw Turbine in late 1984. Terry Maguire Principal Hydro...
