What a heavenly spot. After a lovely walk up from Tintern Abbey, we were greeted by the very pleasant gentleman on the gate who filled us in on some of the background and on how Covid-19 has affected the garden. The veg garden couldn't be planted at all this year which must have made the staff very sad. The flower garden was closed for a number of months with only one gardener in situ who kept the diamond shaped lawns and beds in shape.
The gardens are a haven of peace with lots of sponsored fruit trees around the perimeter. We were even told to feel free to taste the apples if we wished. We tasted three different ones and enjoyed them. The herbaceous borders are full of interested plants and shrubs and not manicured to with an inch of their lives! This, in our view, is just they should be, making them a delight to birds, bees and to the visitors who are privileged to walk them. It was a wonderful experience to walk around without the sound of traffic and to hear the birds and bees as the background music to our visit. There were people working in the garden and others repairing stone walls. It was a great pleasure and we will be back on our next visit, and hopefully everyone will be healthy and Covid-19 will be...
Read morevisited end of may.was appalled at lack of work done in the garden.the beds full of 6ft high weeds&nettles.€5 per adult entrance is an insult.i am a professional landscaper in dublin for 30years.i am very upset that the whole garden is being run by volunteers&no funding is available.staff at abbey reception informed me. why go to all of expense to bring the garden back to former glory with funding, then let it go back to wreck and ruin again? volunteers don't work in the rain was excuse given by reception staff? come on.i run a business in pouring rain, that's no excuse.the pictures on internet are magnificent, but the reality is not like that at all.the humans may fight over budgets&paying out money, but do not take it out on the wonderful plants is my point. a qualified full time landscaper needs to be put in place there to maintain all year round.it NOW needs a team of landscapers to get it back to a good standard. avoid going to the garden now as it will...
Read moreThis is a place that needs visiting regularly. Every few weeks brings multiple changes here. Because of the weather, soil preparation and planting is 5 weeks later than last year. That's Nature for you.
This place is beautiful. You pass the Abbey ruins on the way through the forest to the walled garden. At this time of year, the wild Garlic competes with the Bluebells, a carpet of colour and scent. Walking into the walled garden, the scent from the Apple tree flowers takes your breath away. The grapevines greenhouse is full of greenery with tiny bunches of flowers starting to form. They make their own Colclough Craft Cider here. If you are in the are, pay...
