Altamont Gardens, Ireland — Not Recommended for People with Disabilities
Parking is far from the entrance — we had to push a wheelchair over about 150 meters of gravel. Google Maps marks this place as accessible, especially for wheelchair users, but that’s very misleading. In reality, the paths are all gravel, extremely difficult or impossible for wheelchairs, and access to the river is via stairs only — no ramps or alternative routes.
This is essentially false advertising that lures in people with disabilities by showing the wheelchair symbol on Google Maps, while the actual conditions are not accessible at all.
There may be a map or guide somewhere, but when you're walking with four children and one adult, all with disabilities, there’s no time or energy to search for it. Directions and accessibility should be obvious and integrated into the route.
The picnic area is poorly planned — it’s located right on the same gravel area where cars are parked. While you're eating, cars kick up dust nearby, and if the wind is blowing your way, all that dust goes straight into your food and face.
Eating on the grass is forbidden. When a child with a disability was hungry, we quietly fed him on the lawn and cleaned up everything, but were still reprimanded by staff.
Altamont Gardens is absolutely not suitable for people with disabilities. It’s a shame — this place could have been a truly welcoming and...
Read moreGreat spot to visit. Car parking costs €2 and is patrolled by a warden. The main house itself is not open to the public and is probably in need of repairs...but Altamont is all about the gardens!!! To the right of the house is the cafe and shop, which is located inside the walled garden. The cafe serves pre-made sambos, cakes, coffee and tea. The tables are all surrounded by plants, it's a really nice space to enjoy your grub. The shop is also located here and sells plants and flowers. There are quite a few picnic tables scattered about if you want to bring your own food.
You access the main gardens via a gate to the right of the house. There is a small OPW office at the gate, and there are free guided tours run every hour. The gardens are seriously impressive. Very well kept and maintained. The first part are more formal, leading to a lake with ducks. From here there is a river walk I would highly recommend that is circular and brings you back to the lake past a small stone structure called the temple. Note this trail has some rough ground so probably not suitable for buggies or small kids.
Put Altamont gardens on your list and also pop in to see Rathgill hillfort which is just...
