Amazing place to know about the history of Ireland and the important role it played. This place had been a witness to the millions of people who departed in search of better life during the famine. Our guide, Kim answered our questions and though the guide tour was short, she made it interesting for our group. Windmill has been restored to the former glory with a lot of support from the locals and govt. While going up make sure that you grab the handrails and also while coming down make sure that you face the stairs as the wooden ladder is very very steep. The corn was taken up to the third floor where the grinding wheel is and the corn was carried up by the turn of the wheel. Ingenious engineering and the sheer size of the wheels will amaze you and almost 3 centuries later, the windmill will testify the hard days gone by. Totally restored to the original from the dereliction, shows the commitment of the locals and the govt to bring in tourism to the place. Quite a lot of parking available and the cafe next door serves up good food. Cafe personnel are also very nice and helped us with a broken bottle in the parking lot. Please make sure that you visit the model railway after visiting the Windmill as that place is anybody's delight - who are interested in the toys! Expensive hobby to maintain but you'll be able to see the big and small trains , also the ones on huge built up railway tracks that goes through railway bridges, country sides, and all other natural areas as depicted in the topography. Exiting to the other side of the door - on your right, is the men's toilet on the left is the ladies. Some of the old artifacts used during old railway lines are also displayed in cramped areas of display. Outside too, there is a very powerful telescope on which you'll be able to see quite a distance- approximately 10kms away and that's impressive!! Nicely maintained garden too! It was raining when we went there but it was still a good experience. Be very careful when you climb up and get down the wooden ladder as it could be slippery...
Read moreI would highly recommend a visit to this historical windmill located in the heart of Tralee Co. Kerry. It is extremely interesting to know this is the only functional windmill in Ireland which was acquired by Kerry Co. Council. This is a must see when in this area of Ireland. From Tralee City centre it is approximately 2.9 km and walking it takes about 40 minutes from the very centre of town. The walk is beautiful as you see the mountains and also the canal. However I would recommend you walk along the canal side and not the road side. The canal side is much more peaceful, child friendly, dog friendly and leisure. The windmill itself is amazing to see inside and also the other small historical museums inside there. It is composed of a railway museum, immigration museum and the windmill itself. You also watch a 7 minute video giving you a backdrop to the history of the windmill. I would highly recommend this for tourists especially international tourists. You will not be disappointed seeing true Irish History. This windmill shows a very strong link to our allies in America. The two lady's who work there I would like to acknowledge Lousie who was our guided tour guide. She was extremely polite, professional, and very knowledgeable. She is also funny. Louise you a credit to the country and people you serve. I would also like to show thanks to Kim who was the admissions officer who again was extremely professional polite and very welcoming. I have never seen such welcoming staff in Ireland. Thank you for an amazing experience. The cost of the ticket to enter the windmill is 6 Euro per Adult and 5 Euro per student. I would highly recommend an entry ticket as you get to appreciate the windmill itself and how it historically functioned and how it was...
Read moreAwesome!
My family and I (Adults of varied ages, children and adolescents) arrived in a decent-sized group, without having purchased tickets in advance; everyone at the Blennerville Windmill welcomed us and took good care of us right away!
We are so glad we visited; we learned a great deal about the windmill, it’s history, The Jeannie Johnston and much more, in a fun and interactive way!
There was something for everyone to enjoy. Though, I think everyone enjoyed the whole experience.
The is ample parking at the entrance of the welcome center. Upon entering, we found the grounds to be beautifully scenic and well cared for. The team members are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and charismatic. The movie was educational and enjoyable.
We enjoyed viewing and learning about the model trains and there were information pamphlets for additional tourism highlights.
Before leaving, we made sure to shop for plenty of great items/ souvenirs in the gift shop (there was an ample variety to choose, something for every budget).
Thank you to everyone at The Blennerville Windmill for a great and memorable experience. Also, for doing a fabulous job of maintaining the integrity of this historic site.
I you have an opportunity to visit, I would highly...
