St John In The Wilderness Monastery — Attraction in Mate Yehuda Regional Council

The place itself is beautiful, lush and tranquil. It is really not that easy to get there and find the right turn in those twisted streets. But that may be the main reason why it is such a calm and not touristy place. I came there as a hiker (hike from Jerusalem) and was quite exhausted, when I finally found that place. I was there in middle of the Corona-pandemic and was the only visitor.

Could have been a wonderful experience, but there were quite some drawbacks: the doors are shut. I called the number at the door (take your phone with you and never come other than during the set opening hours!!!) and had to wait in front of the door for nearly half an hour before a Sister came and let me in.

As I was the only guest and it was well before closing time, I thought, I could stroll around for some time and enjoy the place and have a little prayer or two. But no: 20 min after I entered, the same sister came and showed me the way to the exit. ("You finished!")

As I was really exhausted, I sat down in front of the door and just wanted to have another 10 minutes of rest. But no: the sister came out and was not pleased and said "walk away!"

So in the end... really nice place but I will stay away from it and the "hospitality" there. They seem to be quite happy...

Францисканский монастырь вдали от шума выросший на месте, где находится пещера, в которой пряталась святая Елизавета со своим малышом Иоанном от страшного распоряжения Ирода Великого вырезать всех младенцев мужского пола в возрасте до года. В пещере деревянная скамья для раздумий и молитв, прямо в каменных стенах выписан Лик Елизаветы в стиле церковных фресок. Рядом с пещерой бьет источник, посредине небольшой фонтанчик и золотые рыбки. Говорят до сих пор здесь можно пройти обряд крещения, введённый Иоанном Предтечей. Над пещерой надстроена небольшая, светлая церковь в тёплых оранжево-охровых тонах с окнами из цветных стёкол. Все очень просто, как и проповедовал и жил Креститель, на всём умиротворение и благодать. Глубже в монастырь есть ещё одно светлое место - крохотная(размером с комнату) церковь, поднятая над могилой мамы - святой Елизаветы. Все в этой зале удивительный симбиоз христианства и иудаики, в рядок стоят Библии на разных языках, простота в убранстве минималистична, рядом с крестом - менора, рядом с Библией письмена на иврите, портреты родителей Иоанна... Что-то неуловимо напоминающее и синагогу и церковь одновременно, как напоминание нам всем об истоках христианства. Место, которое обязательно надо посетить, не важно из каких соображений - веры, истории, красоты, покоя......

I wish to visit the Monastery. It seems that the monks are doing their best these days to discourage visitors. Phone calls and emails are not answered and are plainly ignored. Even if they are concerned about their health they should make this clear in some manner. I am quite sure that He did not advocate any form of...
