Update: I've been there several times and always enjoyed it a lot. But this trip was in October, at the end of the dry season, so the falls were rather weak. The previous times I was there in Winter and the falls were definitely impressive.
So my recommendation is to try of course visiting it during the rainy season and then it is worth a 5 star rating, but if it has to be in Summer, then there are other Nature Reserves more worth your time in this region.
Original Review: A strong Waterfall, especially after the Winter rains Well, strong, at the Israeli scale of course. Nothing like in South America, Africa or the USA. But for Israel, it is impressive, just make sure to visit after a strong rain period to see this waterfall at its best, the sight will be worth the long drive. We were lucky this year as we had much more than average precipitations in Israel this winter, and as a result the currents were exceptional as well. The lake of Kineret is filling up to its top and all the rivers in the North are also strong. As always and every year I'd strongly recommend to buy the Matmon Card of the Israel Nature and Park Authority which will give you free access to your family all year long (12 months) , to all the Nature Reserves and National Parks (which also includes by the way the Negev, Eilat Coral reserve and archeological sites like Metsada) You will get back your investment in only 4 visits at most,...
Read moreA tiny nature reserve right beside the border with Lebanon. The trail is narrow and becomes crowded with families struggling to descend down the steeper parts. It features the Ayun, Tahana and Tanur waterfalls which in February were rushing and powerful. The trail is well maintained and staff can be seen emptying trash cans and cleaning around. You should definetily start from the upper trailhead near Ayun waterfall as it will be almost constant descent. The trail is not circular but cars can be left at the parking lots on both ends and use the shuttle ride service which costs 10 ILS per passenger. I would recommend visiting only in winter time when there are less people on the narrow and crowded trail, much more water flow and less heat (it can be hot even in January-February). The views are breathtaking and you should continue up into the Naftali range for the different lookouts to see far into...
Read moreAdmittedly we chose a heavenly day for our walk so everything seemed lit by a magic light, soft and sharp. We started at the upper car park, as we had explored the lower car park entrance to the nature reserve a few weeks ago. So - the steps down are steep and a tad nerve-racking but lead to very easy walking alongside gurgling streams. At the bottom of the steps is a fantastic waterfall pouring into a large fishpond. Walk a bit more - oh dear, more steps, but don't worry each one is safely edged with wood, and the day was dry. Now you enter a glorious valley with not one but two more waterfalls crashing down into the Iyon River. Wonderful sight, but here we decided to turn back - OK, we are in our 80's - and retrace our footsteps. A tiring day and worth every single moment. Use your smartphone to take a video of all those cubic metres of fresh water splashing out of the...
