Nuraghe Albucciu — Attraction in Alzachèna/Arzachena

Small site, but worth the visit, amazing walking around such history - 4000 years old. The audio guide is excellent and very informative (quite technical rather than easy tourist info). All the historic attractions in the area (7 sites in total) can be accessed with one 20€ ticket, which we thought was good value. Visiting them all gives you a good idea of the history and walking in the old footsteps. Some sites are small like this one and just 10mins to see, but together with the audio guide (only accessed via QR code given on ticket on your phone, multi language) they all have staff and are clean. Most sites seem to have parking, toilets and ice creams in summer season - this site especially has a great restaurant nearby which we used. Il nuraghe, ubicato in territorio di Arzachena, è immerso in un bosco di ulivi e macchia mediterranea e si erge addossato ad un affioramento di roccia granitica che in parte ne sostituisce le strutture murarie. Il resto è composto di blocchi grandi e medi non rifiniti a scalpello e presenta una pianta irregolare che lo include nella categoria dei protonuraghe. L’ingresso si trova ad est ed è provvisto di architrave, visibilmente lavorato. A destra e sinistra troviamo due piccole nicchie e poco dopo sulla destra è presente una camera ellittica coperta a tholos tronca dove la sommità del vano si chiude bruscamente con un grande lastrone. Una scala di fondo porta al piano superiore dove è possibile scorgere il perimetro residuo di vari vani e ciò che rimane del pavimento realizzato con ciottoli di fiume. Da qui è possibile accedere ad un’ampia area semi-circolare senza copertura. Il sito è stato utilizzato nella tarda età del Bronzo (1300-900 a.C.) ma fu edificato in un periodo precedente. Venne poi abbandonato e rioccupato nell’VIII° - VII° sec. a.C con funzione sacra. All’interno della costruzione furono rinvenuti un pugnaletto ad elsa gammata, una statuetta in bronzo di un fedele in preghiera e sul terrazzo un’olla biansata con ciotola di copertura contenente frammenti di lingotti di tipo egeo in attesa di una nuova fusione, panelle e spade votive. I vari ritrovamenti hanno permesso di risalire alle varie attività che si svolgevano all’interno del nuraghe, come la lavorazione del latte, dei cereali, la cottura del pane e altri alimenti. Tutto intorno sono state rinvenute tracce di capanne di un villaggio, quasi completamente cancellato dalla depredazione delle pietrame in epoche successive.

If you've not seen any of the other nuraghe in Sardinia, this one is an easy start. It's just off the main road to Arzachena, with a nearby Bronze Age tomb. The village is completely without information boards, so unless you have a guide (book), you'll be left to your imagination. However, there's good info on the internet; the citadel part is amazing given it was built several thousands of years ago, but the buried village takes some imagining.
