Nuraghe Arrubiu — Attraction in Arrolli/Orroli

Definitely the most important and imponent nuraghe discovered so far. If you only have time for visiting one of them you cannot miss it. The ticket also includes a tourist guide which gives a great explanation of the site and its historic background. Maria Antonietta was our guide today who kindly and professionally took us around the site and gave us very interesting information about the site and the nuragic history. The Nuraghe Arrubiu is one of the largest nuraghes in Sardinia. It is in Orroli, in the province of South Sardinia. Its name means "red nuraghe" in the Sardinian language, which derives from the basalt stones it had been built with. The structure was built during the fifteenth century BC; the main tower originally reached a height of between 25 and 30 metres, making it one of the tallest structures in Bronze Age Europe. The main structure, which is made up of five towers, is protected by two secondary walls, making a total of 21 towers. The area covered by the complex is ca. 3000 square metres. Next stop after nuraghe Piscu was another nuraghe, this one at Arrubiu, which was a proper tourist site with a cafe - so we could finally have breakfast - and paid for admission. This was another huge site with walls maybe 10m high and 3m thick and multiple buildings and towers radiating from the centre. There were more wild flowers including poppies as well as lots of basking lizards. In this tower you could see the spiral stairs although they have been blocked off part way up for 'safety reasons'. The staff here were very helpful and gave us an English leaflet describing the site, the purpose of each room and what had been found in excavations. It was impressive how cold some of the interior rooms were considering it was around 30 degrees C outside. The main tower was originally over 25m high which is pretty impressive for something built 1500 years before the Roman Empire...

In un’epoca storica come quella attuale in cui i fondi alla cultura sono sempre più ridotti ai minimi termini, donne e uomini sardi - che sono nati e continuano a vivere questi luoghi poco battuti dalle vie più turistiche - fanno ricerca archeologica continua in questo sito potenzialmente enorme di reperti della civiltà nuragica. Visitare il Nuraghe Arrubiu significa sostenere la ricerca. La visita con la guida è stata affascinante, entusiasmante, perfettamente esplicativa anche a neofiti in materia di storia nuragica, ricca di curiosità per appassionare tutte e tutti.

Avevamo promesso che avremmo consigliato ai nostri amici, parenti e conoscenti questa visita, essendo capitati da Roma in questo luogo un po’ nascosto ma bellissimo, come una di quelle scoperte meravigliose che la vita a volte regala. E così abbiamo fatto!
