Goriuda waterfall — Attraction in Chiusaforte

Hidden in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this natural wonder is not just beautiful – it’s geologically fascinating too.

We parked at Trattoria al Fontanone – the sign said 2€ for parking, but there was no one around, so it was free. 😄 From the lot, you can already spot the waterfall in the distance. The trail is short and sweet:

💡 Fun facts & geology: This 80-meter waterfall gushes from deep inside the karstic Canin massif, where water travels underground before bursting out through the limestone wall. It’s one of the rare places where you can walk behind the waterfall – a magical experience, especially when sunlight shines through the falling water. 🌞✨

🌬️ In winter, the waterfall sometimes freezes, creating an otherworldly ice sculpture. And legends say the cave behind was once home to an ogre named Goriuda and mischievous dwarves called Guriuz. 🧌

Eccellente cascata super originale. Si chiama Fontanone di Goriuda, perché assomiglia ad un fontana, l'acqua...molta acqua fa un bel salto, ed io (ma anche Voi, quindi tutti) posso, possiamo camminare tranquillamente dietro la cascata di acqua e vederla scendere senza bagnarci....insomma quasi mai senza bagnarci. Uno spettacolo della natura. Si può ammirare anche frontalmente seduti sui massi enormi che godono sempre di questa bellezza. Per arrivarci da Udine si arriva a Chiusaforte e lì si gira a dx imboccando la Val Raccolana, immersi nelle Alpi Giulie, e si sale tra la Catena Jôf Fuârt-Montasio a nord e la catena del Canin a sud, seguendo il torrente omonimo appunto Raccolana fino ad arrivare ad un Agriturismo sulla sinistra con due ampi piazzali. Oltre alla 🍻 birra che è sicuramente buona, notare Welcome Bikers, si mangia pure molto bene e Tipico locale. Quindi si parcheggia proprio lì. A questo punto #ConLoZaino in spalla si fa un tratto breve sull'asfalto sempre verso Sella Nevea, finché sulla Dx troviamo le indicazioni ed anche un bel pannello informativo. Lasciata la strada che sale verso Sella Nevea è facilissimo arrivarci con una escursione minima di 15 minuti. Okkio che prima di avvicinarci al fontanone, sentirete il suo fruscio già avvicinandovi e salendo nel breve tratto di bosco, avvicinate alla tavola in legno che troverete e mangiate un po' di polenta con la farina gialla. We visited the falls today and it was beautiful. We enjoyed our time there. I will say that the hike up to the falls is rocky and steep. The area is breathtakingly beautiful. I enjoyed all the mountains, fresh air, and of course the waterfall and the Cascade. The views were amazing. I would love to return.
