Sorapiss, with its huge perpendicular faces, forms part of the mountainous backdrop to the resort town of Cortina, situated roughly 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) to the southeast of the town. The limestone dolomite formations, which are irregular, rugged and sharp-edged peaks, are part of the Eastern Alps. The Cristallo group lies to the north past the Passo Tre Croci, and its southern neighbour is the Antelao. A path to Sorapiss starts at Passo Tre Croci and continues along an easy slope, reaching the refuge at the base of the Sorapiss range, close to Lago di Sorapiss, which is at an elevation of 1,923 metres (6,309 ft). The elevation of Sorapiss is 3,205 metres (10,515 ft). The mountain has three ridges: a central ridge, a southern ridge, which is the part of the mountain that can be seen from Cortina, and, beyond a high pass and little to the west, a northern ridge that culminates in the skiing area of Mount Faloria. There are three glaciers on the mountain's slopes, although these have been melting considerably in recent years. Lago Sorapiss, at the foot of the mountain, is a glacial lake at an elevation 1,925...
Read moreStunning hike!! We hiked it on Tues Sept 30th and arrived at the trailhead around 8:30 am—there were only a handful of cars there. The trail itself was quite muddy and although I saw people wearing mostly sneakers, I am so glad I wore waterproof boots. The white rocks on the trail can be quite slippery, so be prepared for that. The hike was decent. Not overly challenging, but a little technical in a few places. I would be so nervous doing this trail when wet.
The lake itself was stunning. Beyond words beautiful. I am glad we arrived here early and had the place nearly to ourselves. As we were heading down the trail, a ton of people were heading up, so we timed it all correctly for sure.
Of note: there are no facilities anywhere on the trail. The rifugio at the top is closed for the season. So keep that in mind and please, please leave no trace. Pack out what you bring in. I saw too much TP and kleenex on the ground...
Read moreOnce everyone needs to see this amazin place!! 😍 We had beautiful weather therefore the hike was not challenging. Inspite of the lot of scary review how dangerous the 215, we could manage it smoothly. Of course depends on the weather: in rainy or wet weather the stairs can be slippy so more focus is needed! Check the weather forcast carefully! We are a couple, 31 and 34 ages, normal tourists without high expertise of hiking skills. We were in regular hiking outfit and brought drinks, food. We could park not directly at the Passo tre Croci but 1,5 km far away was still OK. It took for us from the Parking to the Lago di Sorapis around 5,5 hour. We started from the Parking around 9:45. People were hiking in every ages also with dogs and carrying children. The lake itself was not too too crowded, but sure many people were there, that’s it. For us it was not annoying, we could find a good rock to seat and had...
