An old and fairly simple, unadorned, but all the more beautiful church. The sign opposite the main entrance explains the history in Italian, Slovene, and English. What's really unusual is the apse, which leaves the foundations of previous buildings out in the open, with the natural mud and groundwater signifying the proximity to the fountain of the river Timavo, which springs out of the rock here after having made its subterranean way...

I agree with all the reviews claiming this as a magical spot. That it is. Its secret that fascinated me when I visited one day in October 2018, around noon, was the realization that the seven windows are spaced symmetrically around the south, so that the light comes in and shines on the altar exactly at three intervals before noon, at noon, and three after noon. In other words, the church itself is a sundial, that you read not from its shadow but from its illumination. And the windows work in any season, whether the sun is low in the winter or high in the summer - that's why the windows are so extraordinarily high.

Il suo segreto che mi ha affascinato di più quando l'ho visitato un giorno di ottobre 2018, verso mezzogiorno, è stata la realizzazione che le sette finestre sono distanziate simmetricamente intorno al sud, così che la luce entri e brilli sull'altare esattamente a tre intervalli precisi prima di mezzogiorno, a mezzogiorno, e tre dopo mezzogiorno. Beautiful and very interesting interior of the church. There are many interesting sights nearby - gardens, gravestones, Timava springs... A nice and calm...
