A quiet, scenic, varied and wonderful walk to the most special and photogenic place in the Sicilian mountains. Free parking at the bottom of the trail (look for the wooden huts) then it was very easy to follow the well kept winding trail, never too steep, well shaded by the lofty forest.
The wildlife was abundant: lizards scatter across the stones, butterflies flutter on every bush, and the hum of cicadas throngs the air. The smell of pine, warm stones and fresh mountain air fills your head as you climb. Our family easily managed the gentle ascent, even in the heat of summer. It took around 30 minutes.
When you reach the caves, the views are spectacular. The variation in the rock arches (there are two of them!) is magnificent, and perfectly frames the other mountains across the valley. You can see over the woodland to the village where the walk began, and upwards to the higher mountains. There is also a small dark cave you can climb into, crawling with wild funnel spiders and containing the largest stalagmite I've ever seen.
