Casa e Tomba di Garibaldi — Attraction in La Maddalena

Garabaldi's home in his later years and his, and his family's, final resting place. Understandably a bit of a place of pilgrimage (almost) to most Italians...being the Founding Father of a United Italy. Grand in its simplicity.

Sadly, there are ONLY Italian guides and you are not allowed unaccompanied around the house complex, so we were bolted on to an Italian group with one English card explaining what we were seeing. (Happy to charge individual tickets, less forthcoming with the literature...which you have to return in any case). Sadly, this meant we ended up being rushed through the whole place, as by the time you had read the relevant paragraph on the card, multiplied by the number of people in our small group, the Italian group had long gone and the guide was upset that we were still looking (and reading).

Parking up anywhere near anything is a hit and miss affair. Do not be fooled if you see cars parked under no waiting signs and think the locals know something you do not...we watched a police woman having a field day writing tickets. Also, even where there are no signs, it seems you can get a ticket(for obstruction?, parking the wrong coloured car...who knows.

Tip: If you are going in by car to the house, find out about the "park and ride" car park. It is not obvious but you can park up there and get a (free) bus to Garibaldi's house , and also from the car park to a...

Luogo bello e suggestivo. Si raggiunge in auto da la Maddalena attraversando il ponte di collegamento su strada asfaltata. Giunti a Caprera dopo circa un chilometro si svolta a sinistra (a dx si và alle spiagge più rinomate come la spiaggia del relitto o Andreani). Seguendo le indicazioni si arriva al parcheggio. All'ingresso del viale che porta alla biglietteria, ci ha fatto piacere vedere una comunità di gatti curati dalla forestale con adeguati cartelli per i turisti con validi consigli per il loro trattamento. Indipendentemente dalle opinioni su Garibaldi, siano esse positive o negative, la tenuta è intrisa di storia, dal mulino al giardino con pini che hanno assunto incredibili forme in oltre 100 anni di vita. Si entra subito nella stalla dove è possibile vedere la lapide di Marsala, l'indispensabile cavalla bianca di Garibaldi. La casa, con le sue stanze e quadri rievoca momenti di gloria e dolore vissuti da una vita, di certo, non comune a tutti. Appesi ai muri quadri e onoreficenze ricevute, nonché foto di familiari, alcuni vissuti appena tre anni come Rosa. Si nota subito come lo stesso Garibaldi fosse amante degli oggetti meccanici, nella cucina, dentro al caminetto è presente un girarrosto automatico e nella sala della scrittura, dietro alla scrivania dove sedeva intendo alla scrittura, un fantastico organetto ancora perfettamente funzionante. Suggestiva la stanza delle armi e soprattutto la stanza con il letto ortopedico che lo ha ospitato negli ultimi giorni di vita. Quel letto, orientato alla finestra che fa da cornice allo stupendo mare della sua Caprera, gli consentiva forse, di viaggiare con la mente alle avventure passate o a rasserenare l'anima dai dolori fisici. Infine il parco, con ulivi e altre piante innestate da egli stesso, vasto, bello e ricco di natura, accompagna i visitatori alle tombe. La visita al compendio non prevede una guida che, invece, renderebbe il tutto molto più piacevole e interessante, anziché leggere o ascoltare piccoli scorci collegandosi al sito ufficiale dai vari QR code presenti nelle bacheche.
