We researched winerys in Montecarlo and around Lucca that would be easy to get to without a car and with a taxi. A waiter recommended Il Calamaio and said the wine was superb. After being dropped off at Il Calamaio from Lucca in a taxi (15 minutes) we realized we needed to make a reservation (which I recommend) we were met by the owner Samuele Bianchi (Master winemaker & owner) & an Italian sommelier (Journalist) they could of have easily told us that were closed or that is was mandatory for a reservation but instead they invited us in the wine cellar for a private wine tasting. It was the highlight of our trip in Lucca and a true wine tasting journey. We highly recommend the wine it's all organic & original, and you can tell they are very passionate about the process and product and it shows. Stay away from the toursity wineries that push out wine like a machine and take time to visit Il Calamaio with wines that tell a story and take you on a real Tuscan journey.

Truly an amazing experience. We made a reservation for a wine tasting the day prior. It was easy to get to by bus and a scenic 12 min walk from the bus stop. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find it was a private tasting. We loved the wine. The owner and winemaker, Samuele, is a genuinely kind and passionate host. His pours were generous and the conversation was pleasant. We learned about his wine, the process, the property and his family... We felt like friends enjoying a glass (or two) of good wine together. This was our best wine tasting experience in Tuscany because it felt very laid back and authentic. We look forward to enjoying Samuele's wine for a long time!

Samuele gave us a lovely tour of his vineyard, then hosted a wine tasting for our family. The wine was fabulous, the food, tasty! Samuele was a wonderful host. Thank you Samuele! I highly recommend El Calamaio!

We visited Il Calamaio yesterday for a wine tasting and we had a fantastic experience. Samuele was an outstanding host; we truly felt as though we were friends sat around his kitchen table. He poured (and kept pouring!) us several bottles of his wines, which were all certified organic, naturally produced and delicious. He explained to us the process of how each of them were made, their flavour profiles, and what made them unique, without going into too much detail up-front unless we had follow-up questions in which case he was happy to delve into it further. We ended up staying for nearly three hours and left with several bottles. I highly recommend supporting this small, independent winery! Thank you again Samuele for a...
