Nuraghe S. Barbara — Attraction in Macumere/Macomer

We visited this nuraghe by chance (it was a lunch stop on our way towards our last destination during our holiday), but we're so glad we found them! We paid 5euros per person and we visited the nuraghe with a guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the nuraghe and their fascinating history. This nuraghe is extremely well preserved, it's hard to believe it's around 3000 years old! We could visit the inside as well and we could even go on top of the nuraghe with a fantastic view. Situato a mezza costa sull'altura che fiancheggia la SS131 all'altezza dell'Ospedale di Macomer ed appena superata l'intersezione con la SS129 in direzione Sassari, si accede tramite una insufficiente corsia di uscita che immette su un tratto sterrato contiguo ad un'area di parcheggio. Tramite una carrareccia, transitabile solo con un fuoristrada od un quad, ed una camminata in salita di circa 15 minuti (da noi affrontata sotto il sole delle 11 - sconsigliabile! - ndr) si giunge ad una casetta in legno prefabbricata che costituisce la sede di lavoro dell'archeologo (nel nostro caso Daniele, "naturologo" specializzato in bird-watching - ndr) incaricato dalla coop. "Esedra Escursioni" di Macomer di accompagnare i turisti in visita nel sito da quest'ultima gestito. Il nuraghe si erge maestoso e potente, contornato dai resti di 4 torri aggiunte in un secondo momento all'originale monotorre, ed è perfettamente conservato nella sola torre centrale che conserva le due prime tholos integre (se ne presuppone una terza per l'accesso al terrazzo di guardia - ndr) . Salendo sull'attuale piano di copertura, il panorama dei dintorni, a parte il moderno ospedale di Macomer, è limitato dalle ultime propaggini del Marghine. So interesting and impressive. Such complex engineering / architecture for something built 3700 years ago. Our guide Sergio was very friendly and knowledgeable. I'd highly recommend visiting and it's only 5 euros, which considering how unique this nuraghe is and how informative the tour is, it's great value. We got to go up the internal staircase to the top.
