We stayed in the Krizia (aka Quercia) apartment on the Varramista estate. There are three clusters of villas on this vast working winery estate. Each of the three groupings of houses has its own pool and shared laundry facilities. They are far enough away from one another to offer seclusion and privacy. We happened to book our stay through US-based Rentvillas.com. On their web site the property is called Fattoria Capponi but if you book direct, it will be through Varramista.it. Both sites offer excellent descriptions of the individual accommodations as well as photos and floor plans.||We were traveling with our daughter and our friends and their daughter, so the 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom configuration was perfect for us. Francesca and Roberta were incredibly welcoming and gracious. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The kitchen in our unit was rather small, but other than breakfasts, we had no plans to cook so it worked out fine. The pool was lovely and clean with a panoramic view that can't be beat.||We found the location to be perfect for the itinerary we planned. Be mindful that you are out in the country, so it would be next to impossible to be without a car. Our day trips included San Gimignano, Cinque Terre, Certaldo/Certaldo Alto, Lucca and Florence as well as several winery tours/tastings, including our on-site tour. All were easily accessible.||For our visit to Cinque Terre, we drove to Pisa, parked our car in a secure lot very close to the train station and took the train up to La Spezia where we transferred to the regional train for the five villages. For our day in Florence, we drove to nearby Pontedera and took the train to Florence.||There are several large grocery stores within a 10-15 minute drive of the estate, including the Panorama in Pontedera, and a COOP and Pam in San Miniato.||The restaurant suggestions provided by our hosts were excellent. The closest option is Lago Varramista (aka Ganzo's) which can be seen from where the houses are perched on the property but would be difficult to walk to. It's casual, family friendly with delicious pizza and even burgers and fries. At Quattro Gigli we enjoyed a fantastic meal in a unique atmosphere. Another nearby find was La Tagliola - just minutes from the property, it was a great place for our first meal.||I can't say enough about this stunning estate and our wonderful hosts!!! Whether you are a couple or small group or multiple families, there are many accommodation options to suit every need and the hospitality is...

Read moreThis was our second time in Varramista. We had stayed here eight years ago at the Feniele house. This time we got the Il Girasole house as we were two families staying two weeks. The property is huge and cery calm and safe. We went every morning walking five km around the property and you hardly meet anyone. The house we staid in was confortable and big enough for 8 people, with 4 rooms and three bathrooms. The pool of each farm house is always located at 10 meters from each house, so even if your neighbhours are using it you dont get disturb. The best with Varramista is its location. Its maximum 40 minutes away fron all the sights. 20 minutes for Pisa or Lucca. 40 minutes for Florence or San Gimignano. Max 1 hour for Siena. We only took 1h20 to go to La SPezia to catch the train for the Cinque Terre (which you can visit in one day if you reach la Spezia train station at around 10 AM). We highly recommend Varramista as its a good base from where to visit Tuscany and in case you wish to atay a day back home it is really very calm and beautifull and the pool side is amazing! Great restaurants nearby (see our other posts). Wild animals at night around the property: deers, wild pigs, rabbits, racoons, and all. Great fun to see them running. We will definitely come...
