After much research we decided to use this northern car park for visiting Cavagrande del Cassible. Other parking places on the southern side had bad reviews about vehicle damage and comments that the paths weren’t open.

Be very clear, the final 1km from the tarmac road to this car park is very uneven (see photos)and why 2 stars are deducted. We were in a SUV which was fine, but be very careful with smaller cars. There really is no place for passing which may require complicated reversing over a reasonable distance.

The wardens at the car park were very friendly and made sure we had plenty of water and proper shoes to walk down in. Flip flops were not allowed! Parking is €4 and the gates close at 7pm. There were two chemical toilets.

The wardens explained that the northern path is 1200m long. We are a moderately fit family and it took us 30mins to get down to the water leaving at 2:30pm. We left at 5pm and it took us an hour to get back up. The path is clear, but very uneven and unmade rock in many areas.

The wardens also explained that the southern path (which is clearly visible from the north side of the valley) is 1800m long and is now open for use; work has finished. Please note, that we could not verify this. When we left, the majority of other visitors, mainly locals, were using the southern path and tourists were using the northern car park.

The pools were a highlight of our visit to Sicily and well worth the visit either way. I think next time I would try the more vehicle friendly...

Make sure to take lots of water, comfortable clothes, and sneakers because there is a long way down to the river and a long hike up. The path is steep in some places, and there are lots of tiny rocks in the way that can make you slip. It took us about 45 minutes to go down and 1 h/1 h30 minutes to go back up. This is the kind of place you spend more than a couple of hours so that the hike is worth your while. The river is stunning and really refreshing. I would do it again but would make sure to take the necessities mentioned and spend more time...

If you have your own bottle, the ticket booth people can fill it with water for free! Ticket is 2€ per person - only card payment accepted. Bring hats or something to cover your head, as the heat going up will definitely be rough. Otherwise the destination is worth it, bring drinks and snacks to spend some relaxing time there. The journey is 1.3km both ways- for me going down was like 30min and up 45min, but dont be scared to take your time, take in the views and breathe.

Bitte unbedingt beim verlassen abmelden.
