My Favorite! If I had to live somewherewith exceptional views, peaceful and relaxing, this would be it. Lake Maggiore, often overlooked in favor of the more famous Lake Como, is a breathtaking destination in Northern Italy that has so much to offer. Spanning the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and even reaching into Switzerland, this stunning lake is a perfect getaway for anyone looking to experience the best of Italy’s natural beauty and culture.

What makes Lake Maggiore so special is the way it brings together incredible scenery, fascinating history, and a lively local vibe. The calm blue waters are surrounded by the majestic Alps, creating picture-perfect views that change with the light throughout the day. Along the shoreline, charming towns like Stresa, Verbania, and Cannero Riviera are perfect for exploring, with their quaint streets, historic buildings, and lush gardens.

One of the highlights of Lake Maggiore is the Borromean Islands—a group of small islands that feel like something out of a fairytale. Isola Bella, with its grand palace and beautifully landscaped gardens, and Isola Madre, known for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning plants, are two spots you can’t miss. They’re the kind of places that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

But there’s more to Lake Maggiore than just beautiful views. It’s a fantastic place for both adventure and relaxation. You can go sailing on the calm waters, hike the scenic trails around the lake, or simply enjoy a leisurely drink by the water’s edge. The mild climate and laid-back vibe make it an ideal spot for unwinding and soaking up the atmosphere.

If you’re a food lover, you’re in for a treat. The area around Lake Maggiore is full of delicious local food and wine. Whether it’s fresh fish from the lake, handmade pasta, or a glass of local wine, every meal is a chance to enjoy the flavors of the region. The cozy restaurants and nearby vineyards offer a perfect taste of Italian hospitality.

Lake Maggiore is more than just a beautiful place to visit—it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression. With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and peaceful ambiance, it’s, in my opinion, even more charming than Lake Como. If you’re looking to explore a lesser-known but equally magical part of Italy, Lake Maggiore should be at the top...

Lake Maggiore is an absolute gem of nature's splendor! I had the privilege of visiting this breathtaking lake, and it left me utterly mesmerized. The beauty and grandeur of Lake Maggiore are beyond words and truly a sight to behold.

The vast expanse of crystal-clear, azure waters nestled between picturesque mountains is a sight that instantly captivates the soul. The surrounding landscapes, adorned with lush greenery and charming villages, create a postcard-perfect setting that feels like something out of a fairy tale.

One of the most enchanting aspects of Lake Maggiore is its ever-changing vistas. The play of sunlight on the water's surface creates a mesmerizing dance of colors, ranging from deep blues to shimmering silvers and golds, depending on the time of day. Watching the sunrise or sunset over the lake is an experience that will forever remain etched in my memory.

Exploring the lakeside towns and islands is a delightful adventure in itself. Each spot exudes its unique charm, with quaint streets, historic buildings, and lovely gardens that add to the overall allure of the region. The Borromean Islands, in particular, are an absolute must-visit, with their ornate palaces and exotic gardens, transporting visitors to a realm of pure enchantment.

Whether you're leisurely strolling along the lakeshore, taking a boat ride to explore hidden coves, or simply sitting by the water's edge, you'll find a profound sense of peace and serenity at Lake Maggiore. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

In summary, Lake Maggiore is a paradise on Earth that boasts unparalleled beauty. If you have the chance to visit this majestic lake, seize it without hesitation. It's an experience that will leave you in awe and rejuvenated, and you'll undoubtedly carry its beauty in your heart...

This beautiful lake, second in size only to Garda lake, is a must see while traveling through northern Italy. The sceneries are varied and beautiful, the drive on the Piedmont side is the best: small villages, sinuous roads take you up to Switzerland, where the northern part ends. The opposite shores are in Lombardy, but aren’t as strikingly beautiful as the western coasts. Ancient villas belonging to ancient noble families as well as to rich entrepreneurs, as well as flourishing vegetation grace this side of the lake. It’s a one hour drive from Milan and truly worth reaching Arona or, further north, beautiful Stresa to catch a ferry boat that will take you anywhere you want, which in my opinion is the best way to appreciate its overwhelming beauty. The three Borromeo (an ancient local noble family) islands are a must to visit. Isola dei Pescatori, small, medieval. With shops, restaurants and some wild beach make it a lively place, overly crowded in the summer. April or May are the best months to visit. Isola Bella boasts a botanical garden and the ancient but well kept castle of the Borromeo family. Both the park and the castle can be visited through the year. The third island is to be avoided, as there’s nothing worth seeing. Near the pretty town of Arona, drive up to check out one of the tallest statues in Italy, dedicated to Saint Carlo Borromeo, an important religious character who dedicated his life to the poor and least fortunate during the 16th century plague, creating hospitals and caring centers to cure the sick and offer refuge and solace...

Lake Maggiore (UK: /mæˈdʒɔːreɪ, ˌmædʒiˈɔːreɪ/, US: /mɑːˈdʒɔːreɪ, məˈdʒɔːri/; Italian: Lago Maggiore [ˈlaːɡo madˈdʒoːre]; Western Lombard: Lagh Maggior; Piedmontese: Lagh Magior; literally 'Greater Lake') or Verbano (pronounced [verˈbaːno]; Latin: Lacus Verbanus) is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore extends for about 65 kilometres (40 miles) between Locarno and Arona. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with many gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia Botanical Garden above Stresa. The Spirit of Woodstock Festival is an annual open air festival at the end of July/beginning of August. It is organized in Armeno by the Mirapuri community. Lake Maggiore is featured in American writer Ernest Hemingway's novel A Farewell To Arms. The protagonist (Frederic Henry) and his lover (Catherine Barkley) are forced to cross the transnational border within the lake in a rowing boat to escape Italian Carabinieri. It also appeared as the location of a fictional racetrack in the racing game Gran Turismo Sport.
