Teatro e Tempio di Pietravairano — Attraction in Pietravairano

This is a great place to visit if you like to see what bad archeological restoration looks like. There has been no thought given to the preservation of what was a beautiful ruin that survived thousands of years of hidden secrets. The restoration has ridden roughshod over the ancient elements of antiquity. You can barely make out any of the old structures to the construction works that have built over the old site. It is a completely new building which includes new stone walls, boardwalks, ugly metal fencing, lighting, power and lots of concrete. It’s really sad to see that the funds to destroy this relic were provided by a European Union grant. To completely remove the old elements that make an archaeological site like this unique, is a travesty and should be illegal. The view however is magnificent, yet I couldn’t get the knowledge of a complete disregard for heritage that has consumed this monument out of my mind. If you are looking for preservation of a monument, you may not be impressed. If you like bad restorations then this place is for you. It is up there with the restored Jesus...

Nice day hike, great views. We mostly let Google do the navigation then followed the weatherbeaten signs for Teatro Tempio Monte San Nicola through town, kept going around the bend from the street parking near the castle, went down Via Tramonto (the road with road construction on the side) and parked on the side of the road at the bottom of the hill (41°20'08.5"N 14°09'53.5"E). Walked another 100m then took a right and went up the hill. Sign at the top directs you to the right along a gravel road that turns left past an olive grove, then turns into a rock paved path. Overall rating the hike as moderate. Once you pass the building at the bottom of the hill, the path turns to gravel and loose stone. It's only about 1.2 km from the parking spot to the top, but the path is steep and footing can be unsure because of the loose stone. Solid wood railing helps, but recommend hiking boots and a...

There are few places as stunning as this place. I brought my trumpet here and played in the theater to see how it woood be. Acoustics are great and it would be amazing for a concert Unfortunately like many places in Italy it is mostly done….. so unfinished and not readily accessible, nor is the a designated place to park. The trail up is largely unmarked. It looks as though they received funding for a little monarail and trail to the restored theater but ran out of money to finish it. So you have a great theater that is inaccessible to audiences ???? Such a waste of an opportunity for the largely dead town underneath and area.
