Conte Vistarino — Attraction in Rocca de' Giorgi

We had a truly unforgettable experience at Conte Vistarino. The estate is breathtaking — surrounded by rolling vineyards and full of fascinating history.

Our tour was led by Simone, who was an exceptional guide from start to finish. He spoke perfect English and shared a wealth of knowledge about both the estate and the winemaking process. His explanations were clear, engaging, and showed a real passion for the region and its wines.

Even though Riesling Italico wasn’t included in our tasting, Simone still took the time to explain its origins and how it differs from German Riesling — something I didn’t know before, and really appreciated learning. That level of care and insight made the whole experience feel personal and educational.

The tasting at the end of the tour was another highlight. We especially loved the Metodo Classico made from Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Nero — elegant, fresh, and beautifully balanced. The red wines were also excellent, with real depth and character.

If you’re anywhere near the Oltrepò Pavese area, a visit to Conte Vistarino is an absolute must. Between the stunning location, outstanding wines, and the incredible hospitality from Simone, it was one of the best winery experiences we’ve ever had.

This is the jewel of Oltrepò Pavese! Conte Vistarino sits on a vast plot of land consisting of forest and grounds along with vineyards. The private villa looks stunning and sits across from the recently renovated cantina. Daniele offers a warm welcome to guests with a thoughtful explanation of the cantina’s wines. They use their Pinot Nero grapes to produce metodo classico (methode champagnoise- secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle) and charmat method sparkling (secondary fermentation in vats). This wine region dates back more than 100 years, with the Conte Vistarino making the first production of metodo classico in 1865 after studying in Champagne, France. Their Pinot Nero consists of cuvée (blend of various vineyards) and single named vineyards, all having various nuances and different characteristics. They are well made and delicious (this time the Conte studied in Bugundy, France). Tasting them side by side was a unique experience! A small selection of well-priced whites are also on offer.

Sabato 10 Ottobre sono stato presso la cantina per una visita con degustazione.

L'esperienza tutto considerato è da considerarsi pessima sotto molti aspetti.

La visita della cantina è stata un po' lunga e sommaria. Hanno decantato tutti i macchinari nuovi e quanto la nuova contessa che gestisce la tenuta sia 'una grande donna forte' (ho contato 5 volte in un'ora). Alla fine una visita un po' fredda senza quel calore e tradizione che uno si aspetta.

Per la degustazione, avevo chiesto quella indicata sul sito come 'I Colori del Pinot Nero', ma mi è stata offerta solo quella meno costosa 'I Vini dell’Oltrepò Pavese'. Ho poi capito che il problema era fare in modo di usare le bottiglie aperte e non aprire di nuove, suppongo per il basso afflusso di clienti e visitatori.

Alle mie richieste di poter assaggiare i loro vini Top (Spumanti e Cru) facendo intendere di essere interessato all'acquisto o eventualmente pagare una differenza, mi è stato detto che bisogna accordarsi in precedenza (magari potevate informarmi al momento della prenotazione per email!). In ogni caso alle fine mi è stato offerta un goccio di Metodo Classico 1865 Pas Dosé Millesimato (molto buono). Da notare che al mio micro-assaggio, è corrisposto un generoso bicchiere per le 3 guide erano al bar ad aspettare gli avventori.

Detto che la degustazione a pagamento dato che interessato a comprare i vini, mi sembra una follia, Inoltre osservo con dispiacere che i prezzi sono raddoppiati nel giro di 4/5 anni (da 16€ a 30€ il 1865 e i Cru sono passati ad un minimo di 35€).

Esperienza pessima ed è un peccato sprecare un potenziale così grande. La cifra cho speso sarebbe potuta essere molto più alta a seguito di un pochino di gentilezza, maggiore attenzione e flessibilità.
