Castello Theodoli — Attraction in Sambuci

Castello THEODOLI - (Sambuci) The Astalli-Theodoli Castle of Sambuci, nestled between the sixteenth-century hamlet and the rest of the old town, looks like a large irregular quadrilateral, with 4 corner towers, developed on 5 levels. It was born as a castle fortress during the 13th century, and then transformed into a manor house in the following centuries. The present architecture is the result of various interventions, extensions, refinements and embellishments that took place in various phases between the XIII and XIX centuries by the proprietary Astalli and Theodoli families. Numerous are the frescoed rooms of remarkable workmanship and beauty; such as the "room of Jerusalem liberated" in the southern tower, the "salon of prospects" and the "salon of the Sun float" on the first floor; still frescoed are a "bathroom" whose ceiling houses the scene of Mose and the miracle of the water and the "Cyclops room". The frescoes were made by Giovan Angelo Canini, student of the Domenichino, commissioned By Cardinal Astalli and his brother Tiberio. Of great value is also the chest of drawers and beams with relief rosettes in black and gold. On the ground floor of the Castle there is the private chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael. One side of the Castle overlooks the large Italian garden, built from the 17th century and nowadays a municipal park, with avenues, fountains and statues, ranging from hedges and fowerbeds. Walking inside it you can clearly recognize the hedges molded in such a way as to depict the symbols of the two great families owned by the Castle: the three circles of the Astalli and the wheels...

Il motivo di questa mia visita alla Villa Theodoli di Sambuci è stato un evento tenutosi in Piazza della Corte. La presentazione di un libro. Prima dell'iniziativa ho potuto ammirare i giardini che fanno parte del parco del Castello Theodoli, proprietà e residenza di molte famiglie nobiliari tra cui gli Astalli e i Theodoli. Ora bene comunale. Il parco comprende i giardini a ridosso del castello e un'altra parte dedicata ad eventi come sagre e feste dove allestire palchi, stand, aree pic nic. Un piccolo parco giochi. E' un classico esempio di giardino all'Italiana con siepi e fontane. La geometria rigorosamente simmetrica rappresenta le ruote dello stemma dei Theodoli e i tre cerchi dello stemma degli Astalli. L'interno del castello è altrettanto affascinante con molte sale. Visitabile però solo in determinate giornate accuratamente segnalate. Il castello è l'unica attrazione culturale del luogo, insieme ad un paio di chiese. Rispetto ai vari castelli ed edifici storici del Lazio non ha peculiarità che lo rendono consigliabile (a parte forse qualche affresco degno di nota, come quelli nella sala delle prospettive). Purtroppo è mantenuto male, e la scarsa illuminazione delle sale certo non aiuta al godimento degli ambienti. La guida decisamente prolissa. Simpatica la ricostruzione storica dei personaggi, benché più folkloristica che altro. Sicuramente non merita una deviazione, ma se siete a Sambuci e non avete...
