The Victory Lighthouse , also known as the Maddalena Lighthouse , is a monument dedicated to the Winged Victory , located on the top of the Rimembranza park at the Colle della Maddalena . The optic of the lighthouse is housed in the torch held in the hands of the imposing bronze statue , the work of the Turin sculptor Edoardo Rubino .
This artifact was commissioned in 1928 by Senator Giovanni Agnelli who decided to donate it to the city to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Italy's victory in the First World War over Austria and Germany . The top of the Colle della Maddalena [1] was leveled and made less impervious to facilitate the transport and assembly of the parts of the colossal statue.
Work of the Turin sculptor Edoardo Rubino [4] , the statue weighs a total of 25 tons, is 18.50 meters high and rests on a stone base of a further 8 meters high [5] . The light from the lighthouse is visible from all over the city and its surroundings, especially at night. From the top of the hill where it is placed, or a yard covered with gravel , you can enjoy a good view of the chain of the Western Alps and near the statue there is an orientation table granite slab with top brass , showing the rose twentyand the direction of the main alpine peaks visible on clear days with clear skies. An epigraph of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio is engraved on the facade of the granite base facing Turin :
"PVRA MEMORY TO THE HIGH EXAMPLE OF A THOUSAND AND ONE THOUSAND FIGHTERS BROTHERS THAT LIFE donated FOR INCREASE OF HOMELAND LVCE A PROPIZIAR the sacrifice THE FUTURE OF THE BRONZE DVREVOLE LA SELVA renewing SPEND THE WORKERS OF ALL WORK FROM THEIR CHIEF JOHN LAMBS ADVNATI BELOW THE SIGN OF THAT SHORT WORD THAT IN GENESIS MADE THE LVCE

This statue is one of most symbolic place for the city of Turin history of 20th century, WW1. This place atmosphere, inspired me this oil painting composition, entitled 'Photosynthesis'.
I took different pictures and made drawings of the statue and tried to express the energy and feelings this entire natural and historical place gives me everytime I go there, hoping this painting can help you to feel the way I feel when I'm at the Parco della Rimembranza!
If you live in Turin, or you are just visiting, you can't miss this...
Read moreI loved this park, absolutely amazing and breathtaking (literally, as you you have to walk a lot to reach the statue or the highest point). The park, well more like woods, is really amazing and filled with trees. The path to reach the top would be marked in blue (short route) and red (long route). It took us around 45' to reach the top, but it was worth it. The only thing was, it was all snowing and the woods are amazingly creepy when it's foggy and you are alone......
