Fortezza di Radicofani — Attraction in Unione dei Comuni Amiata Val d'Orcia

We visited this amazing site by accident while driving around the beautiful Val d'orcia. We saw the tower of the fortress from miles away (it looked like something from Lord of the Rings from afar!) We didn't realise we could go all the way up and visit until we were there. It is a large site where you can stroll around at your own leisure and take in the stunning views, climb the tower, and explore the underground passages.

It would be an amazing location for a picnic but if you are not that prepared, the restaurant/bar is lovely and a perfect spot for a little rest and refreshment. It was an absolutely amazing experience. It's a beautiful place and if you are in the area and interested in castles and forts, it's a must see.

There is also a grill with great food right next to the Fort. The Fort itself has tons of information inside and has a great view over the area.

Entrance is €4 per person and it's definitely worth it to do it alone or as a group. The tight, windy staircases give you a great feel for the history of the place while also not feeling too claustrophobic. You can really envision the history that comes...

Fortezza ben mantenuta, con torre su cui si può salire (attraverso una comoda scala che è un perfetto connubio tra antico e moderno) per ammirare la bellezza del paesaggio circostante, all'interno della torre, ai vari piani, è stata allestita un'area museale, ma a mio parere sarebbe stata più adatta e suggestiva l'esposizione di materiale inerente l'epoca della storia di Ghino. Ho trovato molto interessante e ben sviluppata la possibilità di ascoltare la storia del Robin Hood della Valdichiana attraverso i qr code dislocati lungo il percorso, permettono di approfondire la conoscenza dei luoghi visitati pur senza avere una guida e rendono più gradevole la spiegazione specie per i ragazzini, meno propensi a leggere i classici cartelloni informativi. Sono stati recuperati e messi in sicurezza anche i cunicoli sotterranei che portano ai bastioni esterni ma, almeno quando siamo andati noi, erano privi di illuminazione e comunque poco curati e quindi privi di interesse, ad eccezione di quello con la presunta prigione. C'erano dei figuranti nella parte iniziale ma erano in pausa pranzo quindi non so dire quale sia il loro ruolo all'interno della visita. Il costo di 5 euro a persona è tutt' sommato adeguato anche se forse prevederei una riduzione per i bambini. Abbiamo notato che nonostante fosse pieno giorno i fari che illuminano la torre di notte erano tutti accesi, mi sembra uno spreco evitabile. All'interno della fortezza c'è un ristorante braceria che però non abbiamo potuto provare perché la cucina era troppo oberata di lavoro, chi fosse interessato a questa opzione probabilmente deve...
