This appears to be more of a tourist trap than anything else. As a wine professional I had wanted to visit Avignonesi since I've always enjoyed their wines. Ended up going for a tour and 'guided tasting' for my girlfriend who had never been a winery before. Since the location doesn't have any vinification facilities on site you only get to look at a vineyard and the different barrels in the cellar. The tasting was very much not guided (you were pretty much left to your own devices and they just came around to pour the wines) and if you had wanted to try the Vin Santo it would have cost an extra 10€/pp on top of that. I had asked if there was any way to waive the tasting fee if we purchased some wine. To which the response was that we'd have to spend a minimum of 500€ per person for them to waive it. I usually always buy wines when I visit a winery and have done so many times at reasonable quantity levels and was never once asked to spend such a high minimum (in fact it was actually the first time that I had ever been asked to spend a minimum amount of money). Looking at the shop and their pricing model it wouldn't be difficult to achieve that, however it would be a major rip off. I decided to just pay for the tasting fee. Ironically, the same evening in a wine shop in the town of Montepulciano I saw a bottle of 2015 Avignonesi 'La Banditella' for 45€ which directly at the winery they were charging 120€ for. The whole experience feels rather commercial and like a massive money grab. It's too bad because I've always enjoyed the Avignonesi wines for their good...

I booked for the tour and tasting for advertised on their website costing 45 euros. Booking was easy and the staff responded quickly to emails. I arrived a little early and was warmly greeted by friendly staff. Our tour guide spoke good English and was also warm and friendly. As a biodynamic wine grower from South Africa I was really looking forward to the vineyard tour which was advertised on their webpage as visiting 2 of our most famous vineyards La Stella and La Tonda". No such tour was given! We were led from the reception area to a spot about 30 meters away from a experimental vineyard, not even in the vineyard. The guide gave some information about the vineyards from a practiced speech. She had no viticultural knowledge and could not answer the questions I had regarding farming practices. This is unacceptable for a advertised vineyard tour. And there was no tour so the information on their website is a lie. The wine tasting was well presented and the wines are good but not exceptional. Because of their dishonest advertising I cannot recommend...

Avignonesi is the oldest winery in Montepulciano. We came here with no reservations, but the staff were kind enough to accommodate us. We ended up having the 5-course menu with wine pairing. It was absolutely fantastic! The food, the wine, the atmosphere were all top notch. Cheers to the lady from the Netherlands who gave us a very informational tour and was very kind and welcoming. The rest of the staff were nice, albeit a bit snobbish. They initially treated us with contempt not offering the lunch option in their restaurant even after we have asked. They initially offered one option for a cheese plate at the front patio overlooking the parking, which let’s face we didn’t come all the way to Tuscany to face a parking lot. After showing up pictures of the restaurant from their website, they prefaced with “oh the restaurant is only for a set grand cru menu” as if they were assuming that we won’t be able to pay for it. Aside from this cold condescending treatment at first, once seated, the rest of the experience was lovely.

I visited Avignonesi last year and ate lunch with my family. I'm writing a review a year later because I honestly can't stop thinking about how amazing it was. The views from the dining area are drop dead gorgeous and the food is on par with the view. We made a last minute booking, the staff was very kind on the phone. They fit us in with a large group but they did not let us fall by the wayside. Even though they did not plan for us, the service and the food was spectacular. I suggest that you attempt to taste every wine and food pairing on the menu. It's easily done with three people; just pass the dishes and cups to your hearts desire then fight for you favorite! As far as the wine tour goes, it was not too long or complicated but you got to see some of the features that make the vineyard special like it's radial vineyard. Overall, an unforgettable experience.
