Visiting Etna’s South-Eastern Crater was an unforgettable and awe-inspiring experience, truly one of the highlights of my trip to Sicily. The landscape feels like stepping onto another planet, where ancient lava paths, black volcanic sand, and clouds of steam surround you in an incredible natural spectacle. The views from the crater are absolutely breathtaking, with panoramic sights of Catania and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance.

I highly recommend taking the half-hour walk along the lava path, which leads you through an extraordinary mix of volcanic rock formations, small caves, and even a surprisingly green patch of vegetation locals call the “jungle.” It’s a surreal contrast, the lush plants growing right on hardened lava! The trail is easy to moderate, so comfortable shoes and a light jacket are a must, especially as the temperature can drop quickly with altitude.

Near the parking area, there’s a coffee shop and restaurant that’s perfect for warming up after your hike. The food was surprisingly good, fresh pasta, panini, and espresso that hit the spot while enjoying the view of the mountain slopes. However, the washrooms could definitely use improvement; they were not very clean or well-maintained, which was a bit disappointing considering how many tourists visit daily.

There’s also a gift shop offering local souvenirs, lava-stone jewelry, and honey products made from the surrounding Etna region. Overall, it’s a spectacular destination that combines adventure, nature, and local charm. Despite the minor washroom issue, Etna’s South-Eastern Crater is absolutely worth the visit, a truly unique experience that captures the raw beauty and power of Sicily’s...

Incredibly small ...

Telling in words the emotions and the incomparable, boundless inadequacy which leads to consider oneself standing on Mount Etna is impossible! You have to go there to understand; we are small, really incredibly small ... Here! The earth moves, trembles, rumbles but with a dark, deep rumbling ... the sulphurous smoke reduces your breath and you struggle to rise even more heavily ... the fog, that is, the clouds lead you to see nothing and then, as if to make you want to better understand where you are and who you are, everything opens up and you think it is better to run away, far away ... Incredible, very very beautiful, fascinating and, I don't know how to tell you anymore ...!

Incredibilmente piccolo...
