Day 7 – As we awoke on our last morning in the deep west, we had to make a stop at Barney's botanical garden. A beautiful sanctuary full of firecracker flowers, bromeliads and heliconia blooms along with hummingbirds; we arrived at 10am when Barney, bless him, wasn't expecting us – he was a quaint man from Germany – and he had a big heart for hummingbirds and his plants. We were welcomed and given a tour. The garden isn't too big but is perfect to watch where the birds go. We realised after 30-50 mins when others arrived that patience was a virtue. Several, approximately 4-6 others, showed, however, had no patience for nature and missed out on feeding these beautiful creatures. We got to feed them several times (not all caught on camera), which was incredible to see their colours and hear their sounds. We gathered they liked the colour red, as Barney wore red as were the sugar water bottles, so we used our incentive. Our good friend Emily brought us some croc-like purses, which we used to carry money. Luckily, mine was red and actually attracted them closer to us. We spent a good 2-3 hours at Barneys, and it was the most magical morning. Thank you, sir! Keep up the good work protecting these beautiful creatures.

Keep your expectations in check..this is not a controlled environment where birds are “captive” in nature..you are still in the wild so it’s a bit of luck and patience, I guess? We were able to get a few feeds in, captured some nice pics and videos and definitely enjoyed the gardens- it’s beautiful. I don’t believe this is a $20 USD activity and I think it could be better priced at $10 for the value provided. Damian, who is the lands keeper, was very helpful, cheerful and kept us well entertained with conversation while we patiently waited for some action :) Now!! That all said, we have read other reviews here about a potential environment where the on-site animals (dogs) are treated poorly/abused (allegedly). While we did not observe anything directly ourselves, we definitely heard some intense bouts of yelps from the house area which troubled us. We are dog owners ourselves and made us uncomfortable. The dogs on site are just lovely.

This is a beautiful oasis. You can see the love and hard work in the details. The size of it is not in the number of paths, or how big the actual garden is, or how many birds you’re going to get to see, but the hearts that go into it, to keep it up despite the odds of it even existing in the first place. Your money goes to support a beautiful idea, that someone cares enough to carve out a small sanctuary in honor of the delicate and precious flora and fauna of this island, when there is nothing else like it, and no real support apparently for any natural attractions. For this it was worth every penny and more. Plus I was lucky enough to encounter and feed a few beautiful hummingbirds. Thank you for the tour and your generous time!

Extremely disappointing and was left with 3 small children crying. . .

We arrived at 2.05 pm it cost us $60 (usd) to get a taxi there and back from our hotel and just under $100 for entrance. (2 adults 3 children. 7, 8, 10)

upon arrival the owner a German man seemed nice enough, said hello Introduced himself.

We were surprised to be entering a residents small back garden. Please dont expect anything else.

the owner then give us a tip 'be very patient and the birds will come to you' and with the help of his very nice accomplice (local worker) told us all a different spot to stand and wait for the birds. I myself had a humming bird come very close and 1 of my children also. We were making the most of what it was and it looked as though we would with a bit of patients get to have a close encounter with a humming Bird.

After 15 minutes (no longer) someone else came to the garden gate (entrance) this is when the owner very rudely said "ok your time is up you must leave immediately". We were all very surprised and our children were extremely upset. The local helper pulled us to 1 side and apologised for his behaviour. We said does this happen usually? He replied with yes all I can do is apologise. Our children cried all the way back to the hotel. And we were $160 worse off than we were a couple hours ago.

My advice is please do not go if you expect anything more than a small back garden with no bathroom availlable to use. And very rude old man for an owner.

*edited from here

It was not at all that it was not child friendly we were very much starting to enjoy the birds and the prospect of meeting some. It was the cutting very short of our time to little...

I went there with my family on saturday 19/03/2022 at 10 am. The young Jamaican worker greeted us warmly and unvited us in. We asked how much it would cost just to be sure because on the gate it said Jamaican with with National ID would pay 1000 jamaican dollars. Others pay 20 US dollars. The two persons who accompanied me had Euros . We asked the owner Barney how much is it in euros. He said 18 euros per person. I said I am Jamaican and I have National ID to show. He said I didn't live in Jamaica and I would have to pay like the rest. When I refused to comply to unfair demand. He proceeded to be vulgar.. To use his words ' move your bloodkleet'. Especially when he realized that rest of my company didnt agree with him. So to my German friend Barney ...30 years living in Jamaica has not taught you to be Jamaican. To be Jamaican is an attitude topped with warmth and hospitality. Discrimination is not done here. Travelling to another country hasnt made me less Jamaican nor you less German. You maintain all advantages if you desire to return to your birth country Germany. The same way I do in the land of my birth Jamaica. If you want everybody to pay 20 US dollars then use that on your websites and advertising but do NOT mislead potential customers and try to classify who the Jamaican are or are not. My forefathers and the Jamaican government elected by the people of Jamaica...
