Let me preface this by saying I'm not someone who has extremely high standards for golf courses. I've played lots of cheap municipal courses and had a great time, I'm not some kind of expensive country club member or something.
I would highly recommend you do NOT waste your time playing here, even if it seems like a good deal because the greens fee is included by your resort. Not only because of conditions, but also because they'll charge you for just about everything else you can think of, and it'll end up being expensive anyway.
First of all, this course is in worse condition than any I've seen before (including local municipal courses) – you will hit shots that you watch land in a wide open area, or even the center of the fairway, and then not be able to find your ball because of the conditions. Grass is extremely long and thick, and the greens are very bumpy and have TONS of bald spots. Cart paths have major potholes, and then also just randomly end out of nowhere - there are stretches of multiple holes at a time where there is no cart paths and minimal signage, and the only way you know where to go is because your caddy tells you.
Rental club sets range from $20-50, and the top end sets are cheap beginner sets like Callaway Strata. The cheaper ones look like hand-me-down sets you'd get from an elderly relative, mostly brands you've never heard of, and mine had 2 lefty clubs mixed in with a righty sets somehow.
I brought my own balls and tees, which saved us some money, because they will charge you for them (not included with rental clubs). Even still, we ended up spending about $200 for two golfers, and that was in spite of our greens fee being covered, which would've been an additional $160 according to the signage. And again, that's $200 to play a course that was far worse than my local one at home that would've been $50.
They'll charge you for everything - clubs, balls ($1/ball for used balls, or boxes of new ones for more), tees, caddy fee, caddy tip, cart, even water to drink (was told there is no water fountain to fill my bottle, just bottled water or Gatorade for $3). Cart and caddy were not optional, and after seeing the course, I can understand why.
We stopped keeping score after 1 hole when we realized what the experience was going to be like, and we quit playing after 9 holes even though we were supposed to play 18. As far as I could tell, there was no driving range (at least, that wasn't offered to us as an option pre-round), nowhere to take a quick A/C break, and nowhere to get a...
Read moreThis golf course is probably right on par with your rural public course back home. The rough is super thick, and the greens are very fluffy. Overall, I give the actual course conditions a 5/10.
The rental clubs were just fine. They have different sets ranging from $20 to $50 to rent. The $50 sets were Callaway brand. The $20 looked pretty rough. We went with a $30 set, and it was just fine. Maybe 12 years old, but good condition. The grips could use re-doing, but not terrible.
You have to buy balls, tees, gloves, and anything else individually. There was also a kid selling extra balls out on the course. The balls are entirely mixed - some random Pro V1’s, and some Noodles, and everything in between.
We paid about $80 total for 9 holes (including the Couples discount, a cart, 8 balls, rental clubs, tees, and a few beers). They have a cooler with ice for the beer, and they have a few small snacks for sale. It was very slow when we played, so they did bring more beer out to us on the course.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would give the service 10/10. They accidentally charged us more because we did not present our Couples ticket, but they were quick to refund the amount back to our cards. They were very helpful about getting the van back on time and showing us around. The caddie was friendly as well. She was more of a guide than a caddie, basically shepherding us through each hole with generic guidance like “we are 65 yards away”. But, she would joke around with us and hunt down errant shots. We tipped about 20%.
Overall, if you are looking to play a quick 9 after several days at the pool, this is a good spot. We had a wonderful time, and it didn’t take the whole day away. Don’t expect a fancy, country club level service, and don’t expect fast greens or short fairway grass. However, the experience was fun enough (and we got 2 birdies...
Read moreInteresting golf course but you must pay for a caddy whether you want a caddy or not. This did not go well with my husband. The caddy was helpful because they provide no map or signage to tell you the layout of the hole or distance of the pin etc. Keeping in the spirit of Jamaica everything is about providing service for a tip. This distracts from the golf game itself. We played 9. The course terrain presents many hills and I found pin always difficult to see until you were on top of it. However we golf in FL so its pretty flat mostly if your used to lots of hills this may present no difficulties. There was no food that we could tell connected to the golf course. I saw a beverage truck but it never came near us? I think we may try Montego Bay for golf should we go back to Jamaica. But its not the worse course , so if your in Negril and you want to play it is adequate to scratch the golf itch, just not comparable to most USA courses. Its...
