This is the place to visit, if you want a deep insight into Bob Marley's childhood and humble beginnings. You can see the community yard where he spent his youth, and view the vehicle he loved dearly. Still home to locals, this is a vibrant neighborhood, filled with hard working locals, and bright eyed children, working towards a better tomorrow. As a tourist, when you walk into the gates of Marley's childhood dwelling within Trench Town, a hoard of local Jamaicans will herd you into an admin office, where the woman in charge will inform you of the ticket you must purchase, to even get into the yard and premises; this is despite all the hoards of local Jamaicans you will see just casually sauntering into the yard, and simply 'chilling' in the yard, and hanging around Marley's supposed cherished vehicle etc. She will inform you that the ticket will include a guided tour as well. Now,it appears that a company has taken over the money making aspect of Marley's chldhood dwellings; not unexpected in a developing nation, where there are no security measures to protect apparent original items such as Marley's vehicle (locals appear to sit in it and smoke all day, except to politely stand aside when a tourist shows up). And it is ok with tourists like myself. As long as the hardworking locals and guides such a Blackie and his partner guide ( a very sweet gentleman who is saving up for his daughter's nursing school) also benefit financially. So, when you are there as a tourist, and you purchase that ticket, make sure to ask the admin there if they are paying these locals well (because the guides live right there in Trench Town!). Your tip alone is most likely not adequate to help sustain these hardworking local guides. These are Marley's people....his community...his brothers...the ones he was fighting for; let's be mindful of supporting and honoring his community, as we enter his childhood dwelling with a tourist or fan's curiousity. Trench Town is still a very neglected and run down part of the city (local taxi and uber drivers are resistant to driving to that part of town, because it is not in the best shape). Marley would have wanted it to be in a better state, and wanted his childhood community to to be thriving. Let's do our part to look out for the people that the late Bob Marley was...

This was a really unique and worthy experience. We opted for the full community tour option ($30 US per adult plus tip for the tour guide) and we were there about an hour and a half. The woman who runs the place seems really amazing and her son was an excellent tour guide. The community tour may vary depending on when you are there and what is going on. The tour of the museum/house felt a little rushed- there was tons of stuff to look at and I could have spent more time in each room. Bob Marleys mom’s house is only something you can see from the street not enter. I could go on about how valuable I think this experience would be for everyone…the community is very welcoming and the place really is open everyday as those who run it live right there. Just pull up and ask and they will get someone if the gate is closed. She also runs a hostel right there nearby as well if you are interested in really being immersed and welcomed into the community. I wish more neighborhoods all over the world would organize cultural history, community cooperative and immersion...

Oh man, TrenchTown! Do I really have to say something else? But of course! The historical background is best experienced there, but if I can say one thing, then this: I was really welcome there. I met very nice people. Link up! Especially in the Culture Yard you feel the Natural Mystic Blowing. You become the Jam. I've even been there a second time ... because of the people. :)

After the third time in Kingston and the Culture Yard: This place is one of those places I would call a castle. From here you can explore and get to know Kingston very well, you get tips from locals and you can get escort and taxi there, but much more ... It is an oasis of peace,... jump on...

Right, this one was very interesting. The culture yard is literally 5 rooms and a yard. The entrance fee is 20$ US and we didn't get a receipt. There is a guide there who will tell you the story of how reggae music began in Jamaica and how Bob Marley made it popular all over the world. If you are into this stuff you will find it very interesting. BUT, the guide himself is a 'museum' as he is a very weird person and I marveled at him more than I marveled at the empty rooms in the museum. I am almost certain he was stoned and he gave me the feeling that we are not welcomed there. 🤦 I went there with two guys, but if I were alone, I would have felt very uncomfortable. The culture yard is located in the middle of the worst neighborhood in Kingston. You go there by car. YOU DO NOT WALK!!! You don't get off to take pictures or anything. You don't go there without a local! If you're into reggae music, I don't recommend it. Spend that money at the Downs river.

NOT WORTH IT. The basic “tour” is US$20 and you literally visit 6 rooms with no more than 10 pictures each and it takes less than 30min to visit it all. On top of that the lady doing the tour (short black hair, not the blonde one) barely explains or can answer minimal questions regarding the violence in the 70s. Having said that, the blonde lady is amazing and Miss Collins a wonderful lady who got to know Bob. There is a crazy man inside yelling and swearing. It’s sad they are trying to charge this crazy amount to tourists and ON TOP OF THAT they don’t allow you to take pictures inside! I feel bad for the rest of the people that work there but they should be honest and stop charging this amount or else add more stuff to make it worthwhile (doubt it). For example, tour on Bob’s house is only US$ 5 more and its a poper guided visit in all rooms with a knowledgable guide and you end up the visit with a movie.
