科学館が位置する秩父市中津川地区は、明治時代に林学博士の本多静六が、学術研究と林業再興のために、私費で山を買い取り整備をしていたところ。日露戦争後の好景気で木材需要が高まり、本多は周辺の山々から思わぬ実益を手に入れることになる。

山林は後年埼玉県に寄附され、現在ではアウトドアスポット「彩の国ふれあいの森」として整備されている。この科学館は学習と体験の中心であり、入口では寄附者である本多静六の銅像が出迎えてくれる。 中に入ると高い吹き抜けの開放的な構造。柱には全て県内産の樹齢85年を数える杉材が使われているそうだ。展示スペースでは、奥秩父の動植物相の解説、ゆかりの人物である平賀源内、本多静六の事績の紹介、木材の多様な使途や森林の役割などを学ぶことができる。
