I recently visited the Usu Volcano Observatory, located at the foot of Mount Usu in Hokkaido, Japan. As someone fascinated by geology and volcanology, I found this observatory to be an absolute gem.

The observatory offers stunning views of Mount Usu and Lake Toya, making it a great spot for photography. But what really impressed me was the wealth of information available about the volcano's history, geology, and current activity.

The observatory features interactive exhibits, diagrams, and displays that provide a comprehensive overview of Mount Usu's volcanic activity. I was particularly fascinated by the real-time seismic data and webcam feeds that allowed me to monitor the volcano's current activity.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Usu Volcano Observatory to anyone interested in geology, volcanology, or simply learning more about this unique region. The observatory provides a fascinating glimpse into the science behind volcanic activity, and the stunning views of Mount Usu and Lake Toya are an...

It is great place to visit! Can see the ocean, Vulcano (active one) ,lake...beautiful panorama. Gondola is going every 15mins, it was aroud 1500yen, if you are coming with car to the base of mountain, parkig is 500yen. This place is 1day trip. Nice park, museum, to see remains of the old village after eruption of the Vulcano. Prepare camera, many things to see here. There is hiking trail around crater, it is ~ 1.1km long one. It is a nice story about Volcano research, don't miss to hear it. On your way back, go to some Hot spring/onsen...

After taking the cable car up, simply walked out of the cable car station, then turn left to the observatory (There’s a flight of stairs).

Breathtaking view of Mt Usu and also the surroundings. There is a 600 steps path down to the crater observatory which takes 45-60min (one way trip). As it’s a dead end, you must walk back the 600 steps (now up) which is challenging with the thinner air making it harder to breathe. Pls take note of how long you need to walk so as to plan nicely for the cable...

This is a UNESCO Geo-Park. It is an amazing and beautiful place. You can take a gondola up to an outdoor/indoor observatory area at the top of one of the mountains, and have a view of both Toya lake and the ocean, as well as the active volcano. There are several smaller tourist sites in the area documenting various eruptions. The volcano erupted 3 times in the 20th century. No one was injured in the most recent eruption.
