Gotanjoji Temple: Where Cats Roam Freely and Hearts Melt

Nestled in the serene town of Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Gotanjoji Temple is more than just a Zen sanctuary—it’s a haven for feline enthusiasts. Here’s why this temple has captured the hearts of cat lovers worldwide:

The Cat Connection: Gotanjoji, also known as the “cat temple,” is home to 16 cats that roam freely within its tranquil precincts. These feline residents are a delightful sight, each with its own story—some once homeless, others nursing injuries. The temple’s compassionate approach extends beyond human visitors; it embraces these furry souls, providing them shelter and care. Sunday Zen Meditation: Every Sunday, the temple hosts the “Sunday Zen Meditation” (日曜座禅会 / Nichiyo Zazenkai). Imagine sitting in quiet contemplation while surrounded by curious cats—a truly unique experience. Afterward, join the temple master and monks for a soothing tea ceremony, where the gentle presence of the cats adds to the serenity. Photo Spots and Whiskered Buddhas: Gotanjoji boasts picturesque corners where you can capture enchanting moments with the cats. Stroll quietly, respecting their relaxation, and you’ll find plenty of photo opportunities. Don’t miss the rare Buddha statue in front of the main hall. It cradles cats on both knees—a symbol of kindness and harmony. The Symbiosis of Cuteness: Gotanjoji’s charm lies in the symbiotic relationship between humans and cats. As we gaze at these 8-week-old kittens, our hearts melt, and we feel compelled to care for them. In return, these cats enhance our lives, providing companionship and joy. It’s a beautiful cycle of survival and love. And the cute puppy there is just too cute not to try to pet the goodest boy. And who can resist those expressive eyes?

In the grand tapestry of life, Gotanjoji Temple weaves together compassion, tranquility, and the adorable antics of its feline residents. Whether you’re a cat lover, a dog enthusiast, or simply seeking solace, this temple invites you to connect with all creatures great and small.

Take a normal temple. Drop cats to attract tourists. Sell overpriced products and install donation boxes saying that it's to take care of the cats (looks like they eating like tigers :p). It's alright but I wish a cooler and nicer temple did that, at least. You also need to be lucky to see the cats strolling around the temple, they were hiding under the benches...

Small temple grounds, but overall a nice atmosphere. I hoped to see more cats though the summer heat probably kept them away.

Update 21.04.02: On my second trip there, you can now see a new cute Buddha statue! I was lucky to see a lot more cats, too. Definitely...

There is lots of cats and an adorable dog. The temple itself is beautiful and has a big Buddha statue. However it is a bit hard to reach. If you find yourself on the route between Kyoto and Kanazawa, you should take a short break there.
