西山発電所近く、山王神社入り口の石段の南方、西に面した崖下に立っている杉の巨木です。スギの巨樹として県下第１のものであるばかりでなく、全国屈指のスギの巨樹で、伝説によると約千二百年前の天平勝宝年間に里人の某が紀州熊野より杉苗を持ち帰って植えたといわれています。史蹟名勝天然記念物保存法により昭和二年二月に天然記念物の仮指定を受け、文化財保護法に伴う山梨県文化財保護条例により昭和三十三年六月に山梨県指定天然記念物とされました。すごい迫力❗近くまで行くことがあるなら古木巨木好きなら見た方がいいかも

湯島の大杉山梨県指定天然記念物樹高：45ｍ幹周：11.1m 樹齢：伝承1200年山梨県最大の巨木は、日本で人口が最も少ない早川町の山王神社に立つ。斜面に立つ巨木の幹周は11.1ｍだが、写真で私が立っている場所での測定なので、実際はとんでもない太さということがわかる凛と聳える大杉は、非常に樹勢も良く圧倒的な存在感を見せつける。また神社入口には水が湧いており飲むこともできる。美しい水が育む立派な杉を見て、間違いなくエネルギー溢れる水なんだと感じた。素晴らしい名木に出会えた。
