長崎県平戸市岩の上町 の 最教寺。

弘法大師 空海の霊場として名高い 西高野山 最教寺は、西九州の大師信仰のメッカである。

霊宝館は、国指定の重要文化財の他、仏誕生図、釈尊思惟像等の貴重品や寺宝が数多く展示されている。

石畳の道を歩いていくと、朱色の三重の大塔が見える。

この三重の大塔は、1988年 空海の1150年御遠忌を記念して 奥の院本殿横に建てられた。

日本一の規模を誇る大塔は、高さが 33.5メートルあって 壮観である。

三重の大塔は、地下は大日如来の胎内を巡る「胎蔵界巡り」ができ、第一層は、平戸 松浦家 第35代 観中熈等身の不動明王などをまつる「明王威力殿」、第二層は、現代書家の作品を展示する「墨華秀麗殿」、第三層は、戦死者や寄進者の先祖の霊をまつる「雄健涅槃殿」からなる。

第三層からは、平戸城や市街地、平戸瀬戸を一望のもとに見渡すことができ、平戸の美しい景観を楽しむことができる。
