Tabira Insect & Nature Garden — Attraction in Hirado

First things first, cash only💴 There’s a little shop inside with some cool items and they were even selling a big beetle, but also cash only!

¥150 for kids 4-5 years old ¥310 for elementary/junior aged kids ¥410 for adults

This isn’t to be mixed up with the Tabira Insect Village where you see the big beetle on the pillar. This location is further down the road and you’ll be making a left turn at a stoplight.

There is a guided tour (30-40min) around the back area of the building where it’s just all trees, plants, and some ponds. I think our tour was a bit shorter because of the language barrier. Very minimal English, but we still had fun! I saw an inchworm that was disguising itself as a branch and a small horned beetle. I would’ve never seen these guys if it weren’t for the guide.

Afterwards, we went inside where they had all the insects inside glass cases. What a beautiful and crazy collection! If your kiddos (or you) are into insects or just want to try something different, this was a real nice experience. It’s so close to the castle that we just headed there...

We really enjoyed our visit to the insect garden. Our entrance fee included a 50 minute guided tour through the garden with an expert guide. Even though he didn't speak much English, he pointed out SO many insects that we would never have spotted on our own. I was blown away. We also saw lizards, frogs, a turtle, and many birds. The flowers in the garden are breathtaking too!

The gift shop/museum also has an incredible display of preserved insect specimens, and an interactive area with puzzles, games...

2025/8/7に訪問しました。（旅行で訪問）

平日の13時半ごろでしたが、空いてました。 受付にて、屋外（自然）展示型の昆虫館ですとの説明がありました。入館すると、解説員の方が漏れなく案内してくださいました。

管理棟の周りの森を２０分程度案内いただきました。 この日は前日に雨が降ったこともあり、蒸し暑かったです。 タオルや冷感グッズがあるとよいです。 また、事前に確認していたので、小学生の子どもたちは、車の中で、長ズボンに着替えてもらいました。蚊もいるので正解でした。（我が家は半そででしたが、可能であれば羽織るような薄い長袖シャツも着ていてもよいかと思います。）

虫がいるのかどうかは、天候や時間次第だと思いますが、この時期であれば色々な昆虫が観察できますし、詳しい解説も聞くことが出来ると思います。質問も色々できますし、子どもはもちろん、大人も非常に楽しめました。

エダナナフシ、タイコウチ、カブトムシ、コクワガタ、ヒラタクワガタ、ギンヤンマ、イトトンボ、蝶の幼虫、カラスアゲハなどが観察できました。

最後に管理棟に戻り、涼しい標本部屋で少し説明があってから終了という感じでした。我が家の子どもたちはそのあとも、標本部屋や館内を１時間以上見てました。 館内にはカブトムシと触れ合えるコーナーや、世界のカブトムシ、タガメなどが展示されてました。 滞在時間は全部で２時間くらいだったと思います。

また機会があれば、違う季節にも訪れてみたいです。 （冬は昆虫がいないのでどうなるだろう？との疑問もあとから浮かびましたが聞けずじまいでした。）
