このお寺は、建久３年（1192年）源頼朝が創建したと伝えられ、山門内の公孫樹（いちょう）と白檀（びゃくだん）は、創建時にその記念に植えられたと言い伝えています。 寛永２年（1625年）毛利元倶（もととも）が右田を受領してから、このお寺を再建して菩提寺とし、父 元政（毛利元就の七男）の法名「天徳性真」にちなんで「天徳寺」と改めました。 明治３年（1870年）脱隊騒動の兵火にかかって焼失してしまいましたが、多々良・右田毛利家をはじめ多数の檀家、信徒の喜捨によって再興されました。

2024年12月18日に訪れました。 塚原バス停から西へ歩いて15分ほど。 参道から登山者が境内へ向かう姿を見て、遠くの背景の景色…「あの岩山に登るのか…」と、初めて訪れた私にとっては「なるほど！」と納得。 境内には、もう終盤のイチョウの木が目立つように？生えていて、そんな中で本堂内でお参り。 あの石船山がご神体としての役割をしてるのだろうかと思いながら、庫裏で御朱印をお願いし拝受。 頼朝もこの景色を見たのだろうかと、私もしばらく眺めるのでありました〜

右田ケ岳登山の際に『天徳寺コース』のスタート地点としていつも通らせて頂いております。手入れの行き届いた園内。登山者にも門戸を開き、通行を許して頂いている心の広さに敬服いたします。感謝。感謝。大銀杏は圧巻です。
