鰻池(うなぎいけ)。 不思議な名前ですが、かつてここに大うなぎさんが住んでおりました。 恐れた村人がうなぎさんを捌いた(やっつけた)ところ、捌かれたままのうなぎさんが池に逃げて、そのまま池に住み着いたという。。。 凄まじい生命力のうなぎさん!!という伝説があります。 なお、うなぎの養殖は、1996年で終了し、現在は伝説の大うなぎさんしか残存していないと思われます。 以上、ラッコ店長の自転車旅でした。

とても静かな池・温泉街です。 小さな温泉外ですが至るところから噴気が立ち上り、スメと呼ばれる噴気を利用した料理場が何箇所もあります。 西郷どんゆかりの地でもあるそうで、西郷どんがここを訪れた際連れてきたという13匹の犬の像が集落のあちらこちらに点在しています。 ちなみによしもと芸人銀シャリの鰻さんはこちらの集落出身だそうです。
