You can only enjoy kayaking in the submerged forest during a certain period of time during the year, when the snow from the mountain melts and fills the reservoir of water at Lake Shirakawa. The experience was beautiful, calming, scenic, and even adventurous as we wove in and out of the trees. Hard to imagine that these tress are actually about 5 meters tall and we are kayaking right beside the tops of them!

We have a very sweet English guide, Emma as well. She's not available every day so we were really glad to have her guide us. The whole crew and staff at Iide Canoe were very friendly and helpful. They made sure all of us were safe, well equipped, and knew all safety procedures before we got in the water. We went on a rainy day, which was unfortunately, but the guide still made sure we had fun. We could also see the cool mist above the water because of the temperature drop. They also gave us free entrance tickets to the onsen afterwards to warm up!

If you're passing through Yamagata in the spring/summer, I would definitely recommend checking this place out for an adventure. Recommended to book in advance in case this popular activity sells out. The little town of Iide right next door also has very idilic sights and quaint shops to...

Fantastic morning paddle with our awesome trainers, Norichan and Jun Jun on a fine weather of 31st March 2024. They were professional in conducting themselves, well-equipped with proper equipment ready for any emergency deployments and filled with a calm and enthusiastic attitude towards us!

As it was cold in this part of Spring, the trainers introduced us to interesting facts about the environment and nature such as the trees and even a bridge under the water (only useable when water decreases).

Trainer Norichan was well articulated in what needs to be taught for the kayaking portion and quickly we were embarked on a mystical journey through the calm waters of Yamagata.

I had an enjoyable time with my wife as it was a great bonding activity and appreciating the beautiful nature of Yamagata with a lovely kayak.

We look forward to joining the Autumn session in future :) Thank you...

Very nice canoe tour that makes you come to a secret area of Yamagata and discover wonderful landscapes. Jun, our guide, was lovely and spoke very good English. He gave us interesting explanations about the forest. No need to be experienced to enjoy it!

Oh, almost forgot to mention Jun takes pictures during the tour, that are sent to you afterwards. We were really impressed by the quality of them, so many shots were candid! The result looks so nice and natural when we are not posing, it gives very...

Very beautiful and unique experience. It’s a little hard to get to without a car but the view is totally worth it. After all, it’s not everyday that you get to see a submerged forest and get up and close to the birds nests. Normally, this would be far beyond our reach when the water level has gone down and the trees are at their usual height. Our guide Junji was also so lovely and funny to chat to. We would love to come again in a different season and time to further appreciate this magical forest.
