Kuragari Pass — Attraction in Ikoma

Kuragari Pass is a historic road that cuts through the mountains of Ikoma, crossing the border between Nara and Osaka. It is known for being the steepest slope in Japan.

The pass is quite quaint, with a number of temples, stone Buddhas, and teahouses dotting the cobbled passage.

However, the hike to the top of the pass is quite challenging, with the steepest point of the slope being 31 degrees. The trail is almost entirely uphill, with almost no even spots to take a break.

This road has the steepest grade in all of Japan! It really is hilarious, and I wound up destroying my disc brakes on my bike after going down it.

The ascent is quite hellish, and you need to be in insane shape if you want to ride all the way to the top. The west side has more shade, so going from Osaka to Nara is a bit easier if you're walking it.

大阪と奈良を最短ルートで結ぶ国道308号線、最短ルートであるがゆえの急勾配、そして国道ながらその道幅の狭さや半径の小さい急カーブなどから“酷道（こくどう）”と揶揄されるほど過酷な道です。 そのような特徴から、離合（対向）が極端に困難で運転技術が求められるため、車でのアプローチは絶対におすすめ出来ません。 ※かなり前に軽自動車で通行しましたが、すぐ後に車がいる状況での急坂での坂道発進や対向車が来たときの狭い急坂での後退はマジで冷や汗ものでした。 かといって自転車だとその急勾配から“押し”は必至で、それなりの覚悟を持って臨まなければなりません。 ※体力が有り余る若い頃に一度ロードバイクで臨みましたが、早々に足つきリタイア、あとはひたすら押しで峠を超えました。 そういう意味ではバイクが最も楽で安全にアプローチ出来るのですが、それでも超タイトなコーナーで対向車が突然現れて止まった際に、足を付く地面が遠くてドキッとする場面があったり、下りではエンジンブレーキはもとより、物理ブレーキさえもが冗談抜きで効きづらかったり、上りではギアの選択が相当シビアだったりと、初心者には結構難易度が高い道ではあります。 それを証明するかのように、下り坂でブレーキが効かなかった車たちの過去の記憶が、滑り止め加工されたコンクリートの路面に多数のスリップマークとして刻まれています。 上ってくる車と鉢合わせしてブレーキを掛けてスリップ！なんて想像すると、車でもかなり恐ろしい場面ですが、バイクだったら転倒して大ケガに繋がる大惨事にもなりかねませんし、もしぶつからなくても転倒したバイクを起こすだけでも相当苦労するはずです。 とはいえ頂上にあるコチラ、暗峠（くらがりとうげ）は石畳の道や奈良側に開ける眺望、そして峠までの過酷な道のりから、「来て良かったなぁ」と実感出来る場所になっています。 繰り返しますが、余程の理由がない限りは車では絶対に出掛けないで下...
