It once held the distinction of being known as “Japan’s closest station to the sea,” with its single side‑platform sitting directly above the Seto Inland Sea coast. On clear days, the endless horizon blends sky and sea into vivid blues; at sunset, the platform is bathed in orange, purple, and navy tones, making it a beloved spot for photography and film crews . The station has appeared in movies and TV dramas like HERO and Otoko wa Tsuraiyo, as well as commercials and JR’s Seishun 18‑ticket posters — its iconic scenery has made it a pilgrimage site for fans and shutterbugs alike . The simple platform features an old three‑legged shelter, retro blue benches, and a small waiting room with access ramp. Volunteers from the local community beautify the site, adding seasonal flower beds including sunflowers in summer and cosmos in autumn . Every September, the station hosts the annual “Sunset Platform Concert,” held against the backdrop of the glowing sea and sky—offering a magical blend of music and scenery . Service is infrequent—only local trains and the sightseeing “Iyonada Monogatari” train stop here, the latter timing one arrival at sunset so passengers can alight and take pictures before departing again . I happend to see a promotional poster of this place when I was walking through Matsuyama station subway and thought, wow that looks nice, I have to go there if I have spare time! It turns out, me and a hundred others thought the same, as when the train rolled into Shimonada station, I could see a large crowd of people on the platform photographing the train I was on.

Well, for a moment I felt as if I were some sort of a celebrity, with a large gathering of my fans waiting for me to alight the train. So this is how it feels like to be Michael Jackson…

Well that was the highlight of this three hours round trip from Matsuyama.

Yes, you can take nice instagram-able photos here but for me it wasn’t really worth the time and effort.

I arrived at around 12:50pm on a weekday and lucky there was still parking space next to the station. There is only 4-5 parking space there. I think there is more parking near by as there is a sign. There were around 5-6 groups of people so people take turn to take photo. Around 1pm a train arrives and many people rush to take photos and some jumps on the train after taking photos, and after the train left only 2 groups left behind. They also left after shooting photos. And it was empty😯, we end up taking a lot of photos in that 15 mins without people 😆 and then people start coming again, we check the train time and there was one coming again around 1:45pm and if you miss this one the next one is at 4pm something. I think it’s worth going if you like the animation...
