i’ve seen a lot of volcanos in my life (like in indonesia and iceland) and sakurajima was nothing substantial—up close that is. to me it looked much cooler and impressive from a distance (including at the foot bath by the visitor centre). maybe it was due to the cloudy weather as well that we didn’t get the best view, but anyway.
we got on the very last bus from the visitor centre at 4:36pm—very early, to my utter dismay—and it waited at yunohira observation deck for 10 minutes before heading back down. in my opinion that was plenty of time to look at the views and take pictures. at 5pm though the shops in the building were already closed.
the full bus tour takes around 1 hour and there is an english audio guide too explaining how the volcano was formed and such. i would only suggest coming up here by bus if you have the time, the weather is good, and the volcano is spewing fumes. otherwise, the view from below is plenty good enough (and you’ll...
