Yutoku Inari Shrine in Saga, Japan is a remarkable destination that offers a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage. This stunning shrine, which is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of fertility and prosperity, is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gates that lead visitors up a hillside to the main shrine. The shrine's architecture is breathtaking, and visitors can explore its many buildings, including the main hall, which dates back to the 17th century. The surrounding gardens are also a must-see, with their carefully manicured landscape and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. In addition to the beautiful scenery, Yutoku Inari Shrine is also known for its traditional festivals, which are held throughout the year and are a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture. Overall, Yutoku Inari Shrine is a truly unique and unforgettable destination that everyone should add to their travel itinerary when visiting Saga. #SagaSpirituality

Yūtoku Inari Shrine is a shrine located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. It is one of the most famous Inari shrines in Japan. Dedicated to Inari, the kami whose messengers are foxes, it is the third largest of its kind in Japan. It was constructed in 1688 as the family shrine of the Nabeshima clan who ruled what would become the Saga area (called Hizen at that time) during the Edo period. It was built to the Inari kami of the harvest by a princess from Kyoto named Manko Hime who married Nabeshima Naotomo. The Nabeshima clan was entrusted with protecting Edo’s interests in Kyūshū, in particular the city of Nagasaki, which was one of the few ports open to foreign contact during Japan’s period of isolation. The shrine is also popular for new year celebrations and is very crowded during the first two weeks of January. Source Wikipedia

We went in the afternoon when the Shrine was deserted. From the bus stop you will need to walk through a gauntlet of stores with many vendors engaging us in conversation. At first it was friendly and amusing but by the time we got halfway, I felt they were slowing me down to get to the shrine. On the return, I took the back roads so we could get to the bus on time. Helpful hint: there are lockers at the bus stop and I think I saw some at the shrine. I didn’t know this and had to entrust my backpack to one of the fox (kitsune) statue on the way up.the trail. I asked the fox god to guard over the backpack. The backpack was still there on my way back down. There are vending machine at the summit. Also, they are constructing a large rest station at the top… hopefully it will be ready by summer 2024.
