RECOMMENDED: Beginners and intermediates Quick and easy day trips to practice park runs Day trip with friends from Tokyo
PROS: 3 terrain parks with a good deal of variety Great facilities and rentals (food selection, gear shops) Excellent views on a clear day Good for beginners/intermediates (short to medium-size runs that aren't too steep but have enough angle to be enjoyable) Quick and easy access from Tokyo; parking is well organized (if the nearest parking is full, buses will drive you up) and they rent out tire chains for free
CONS: Extremely crowded; brand power attracts groups of beginners...making some runs a minefield of people lying around No real powder to be found While ski-able, the snow quality is very densely packed and hurts pretty bad Bottlenecks when courses narrow out First lift area felt like navigating through a penguin colony
I went at the end of February for a day trip from North Saitama. Avoiding toll roads, I got there door-to-door in about 2 hr 10 min - traffic was very clear and the drive was scenic. Arrived at 10:10 AM and was able to park just beside the indoor park
Weather was very sunny, hovering just above 0 Celsius but all runs were open with ample snow (310 cm). Due to the rapidly changing temps and large amount of people, the snow, while ski-able, is downright painful to land on.
Courses are short to medium length and pretty fun in general since the angles aren't too steep nor too flat. Get into a good rhythm and you should be able to get a decent number of runs in per hour.
I heard of Kawaba from its terrain park and found it to be good. There's a good variety of stuff to play with on your run but it is kind of narrow so you need to time traffic to make sure that someone doesn't come rushing behind you as you're lining up for a feature. Also, jumps, while decent sized, aren't enormous like some other parks (i.e. Alts Bandai in Fukushima). Helmets are rented free of charge and they offer 1 hr park lessons for 1000 yen (not bad!). There were 4 participants and 2 instructors so we split up in pairs. They asked us what we wanted to cover and obliged accordingly.
If you're into tons of mountain riding through different courses, the shorter and fewer runs of Kawaba might not be for you. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to advanced riders.
However, if you're a beginner/intermediate who wants to get comfortable and confident while enjoying the scenic medium-sized courses and the terrain park...without planning a huge trip to Nagano, etc....I would recommend Kawaba. Do make sure, however, that you are comfortable with stopping suddenly with...

Conditions and beginner runs were pretty good for me, a lower-intermediate skier. I probably would have found it difficult as a beginner as some areas were quite steep and icy. (A few sunny days recently.)
I liked how long the beginner runs were, compared to the other places I have been (Karuizawa Sno-Prince, Yuzawa Naka-zato, Yunomaru, Naeba). I was able to improve a lot! A good amount of curves to keep things more interesting.
Views of the snowy mountains all around were quite beautiful. I only wished that they would change the damn music. It was a constant short loop of slow American R&B club songs with a few bad country songs mixed in. I'm okay with the Dr Dre, but the rest was torture. The second time I came was a little better. Heard a Red Hot Chili Peppers song and two songs from West Side Story. I'd like to hear more Japanese music though, especially Heisei era and City Pop.
Being a weekday in the age of COVID, not many people, and lines to the lifts were short to nothing. Mostly snow boarders, but not to detract from fun for skiers except that they do tend to do a lot of sitting on the slopes don't they? I didn't run into anyone yet.
Rental service had helpful staff and not.
The main eating hall and all facilities were easy to get in and out of from the slopes. I enjoyed the Naan and tandoori chicken at the Indian restaurant. There's also a two-floor panorama view restaurant on the mountain with a mix of...
