Wanpark Kochi — Attraction in Kochi

A beautiful park with a nice lake and fantastic fake waterfall. There is a fake cave behind the fake waterfall that would have delighted me as a child. I brought my 6 year old daughter to this park twice during a recent (last August) trip to Kochi City, and she loved feeding bread crumbs to the birds and fish. There are also turtles in the lake that want bread, but usually move to slow to get any! There was a very nice, very large and very new piece of playground equipment in the park, combining slides with climbing nets, ladders, a sliding pole and many other features. We saw many people in the water by the base of the waterfall, and would have liked to join them in wading around since the temperatures were close to 90 degrees F, but we had no bathing suits with us. Overall the park was not at all crowded; if anything it bordered on an deserted feeling. The Japanese (at least around Kochi) seem to have a thing for building recreational facilities and then not using them.

There is also a rather nice small zoo which I'll include here with this 5-star rating since it was free. How often do you see a free zoo? As in almost any zoo, some of the animals looked a bit sad or even quite disturbing as they paced their enclosures. I think it was a type of baboon that looked particularly psychotic. Nonetheless it was overall a positive experience for my daughter to see so many live animals, as there are no zoos close to where we live. They had a pretty good variety.

There is a Ferris wheel and other rides near the zoo, but you have to pay for them so we did not try them.

Free small zoo with a petting area. Not sure how it’s possible to not charge the visitors and have a beautifully maintained zoo with animals like lions. But this zoo is cleaner and doesn’t have that animal urine zoo smell like the Noichi zoo where you have to pay.
