Tatami Rock — Attraction in Kumejima

On Ou Island, located in the eastern part of Kume Island, lies a renowned natural wonder – the Tatami-ishi Rocks. According to online sources, this magnificent rock formation has been designated a National Natural Monument. It was formed approximately six million years ago from the columnar jointing of cooled and solidified volcanic lava, extending many meters downwards. Due to the abundance of pentagonal and hexagonal rocks, the Tatami-ishi resembles a turtle shell in appearance, hence its alternative name, Kikkō-iwa (turtle shell rock). Only during low tide do around 1,000 rocks, known as Tatami-ishi, appear as if paving the ground.
