Having missed the opportunity back in Nov 2019, we finally had the chance to experience Kyoto’s Momiji Tunnel along the Eizan Railway on 16 Nov 2022.
We purchased the Eizan Railway’s 1-day pass which was a great value (1,200yen), allowing us to hop on and off at different stations along the line, which gave us the flexibility to enjoy both the day and night views of this beautiful route at our own pace. The 1-day pass can be purchased at Demachiyanagi station, Shugakuin station(office), and Kurama station.
The train journey through the Momiji Tunnel was incredibly scenic. Although the autumn colors weren’t at their peak yet (roughly equal mixture of green and red/orange), the experience was still breathtaking, being treated to stunning mosaic green and autumn hues as the train passed through the tunnel.
We particularly loved the contrast between the daytime views, where the warn autumn colours were elevated under the sunlight, and the nighttime journey, where the train illuminated the red and orange leaves, creating a magical atmosphere.

Read moreここは叡山電車鞍馬線の市原駅〜二ノ瀬駅の間にあり、約250mに渡り約280本のイロハモミジやオオモミジが線路を覆っています。初夏には「青もみじ」、秋には「紅葉」が楽しめるそうで、わたしは紅葉を観に昼便の電車で行きました🚃 以下、○気に入っている点 △イマイチな点について述べます。
○″もみじのトンネル″が近づいてくるとアナウンスで紹介するとともに電車の速度を落としてくれるので紅葉を存分に満喫することができます。 ○もみじに覆われている景観を楽しめるように、電車によっては天井に窓ガラスがある車両や椅子が窓側を向いている車両など、工夫を凝らしているものがあり楽しさが倍増します。 △鞍馬線は乗務員の関係や駅の造りなどにより最大でも2両編成が限界とのことであり、インバウンドの最中では常に満員電車となり覚悟が必要です(^◇^;)
